What are the experiences of frequent tourists entering Thailand without visa runs or extensions?

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for people who have had a similar experience regarding regular trips to Thailand as a genuine tourist.

I hold a French passport, and my stays have been as follows:

* 20 days in December 2025, crossing over into January 2026;

* 25 days in February 2026;

* 59 days in July–August 2026, using an e-Visa because I wasn’t sure when the visa-exemption rules were going to change;

* and I’m planning to return for 17 days in December 2026.

I have never applied for an extension, never done a visa run, and never entered Thailand through a land border.

I’m genuinely a tourist. I simply have fairly regular holidays, which is why I tend to return around similar times each year, while spending at least three months back in my home country between trips.

For every trip, I have my return flight tickets, hotel bookings, and the 20,000 baht required in case of an immigration check. So far, I have never been asked any particular questions by immigration, nor have I ever received a warning or any remark regarding my previous entries.

I’d therefore like to know if anyone has had a similar situation: several tourist trips during the year, but always relatively short stays, with no extensions, visa runs, or land-border entries.

How did things go for you when entering Thailand again? Did you encounter any difficulties or get asked any particular questions by immigration?

Thanks in advance for sharing your experiences! 🙏
Answer summary
The post seeks experiences from individuals who have frequently visited Thailand for short tourist stays without applying for extensions or visa runs. The original poster, a French passport holder, details their travel history and asks about entry experiences regarding immigration checks. The community responses generally indicate that many have traveled similarly without issues, provided they carry necessary documentation (like return tickets and proof of funds). However, some warn about potential scrutiny due to growing immigration regulations aimed at preventing long-term stays under tourist statuses.

You are asking for 'people who have had a similar experience' - they don't exist, at least not since the current 'crackdown'. Its uncertain how things are going to pan out but in essence - they are not looking for people like you. They are looking to stop border runners and 'regular visitors' that are in effect trying to live/work in Thailand illegally. That said. you could encounter an over zealous Immigration Officer who's not happy with your entry history and seeks to deny you entry. Make sure you have the 20k baht and a return ticket with you and as others have said - provide some evidence of your employment. If you are denied entry, ask to see the duty supervisor and plead your case. Overall, I would be very surprised if, having spent 3 to 4 months out of the country, you have a problem but as I say, nobody really knows how things are going to go.

You're a tourist, you'll be fine. They're looking for people who are secretly living in Thailand. You obviously aren't.

the rules have changed many times during the past year.

be clear, your trips aren't short, they are exactly what the government are clamping down on — people who max out each stay.

I am having the same thought, as to how the evisa counts: if your entries were all visa exemption, you wouldn't be able to enter again til next year. but, the tourist visa doesn't count as an entry (even by land) but it FOES count as your days stayed history.

why don't you use an agent?

I have never been asked. I had 3 entries last year between November and April. That was the time where you could get 60 days visa free. I stayed between 24 days and 48 days on each entry., and 102 days in total.. Never got asked a thing. This year I will probably just do METV simply because I can't be faffed going for an extension if I do end up being over 30 days and I'm fine with that. You are under 180 days in the year. You've bought a visa on your last trip. Your trips are spaced out. You have never overstayed. You are going for 17 days. you have no problems

People think the Immigration is ruled by law. The reality is that the Immigration is ruled by stressed out Immigration Officers who are as confused about the always changing rules as people here... :-)

Henrik JN this is probably the most accurate. Been coming up to four times a year for the last 14 years and never an inkling of an issue but I wouldn’t be surprised if an immigration officer tells me to get a METV at some stage.

You should be fine, as you are staying for basically a month at a time. Definitely have the "3 asks" as you mention. IF you are working, I MIGHT keep a letter of employment on me. That might be overkill, but easy enough.

I’ve done 4 visits a year, for the last 2 years. All visa exempt. I stay for 3, or 4 weeks. Once I was asked to show return ticket and hotel accommodation, for that night. I’ve never had any problems. Neither will you, if you’re a genuine tourist. Enjoy. 😊

I hit problems after two 60 day stays, I was warned but they let me in. So, I think you will be OK but they may warn you.

They may ask if you have a girlfriend. They asked me.

Ralph Tyson did they let you in for another 60 or for 30?

Would be very odd for them to allow 180 days

Spending half the year in thailand means you are not a tourist
Ralph *******

Tim Hallmark 60 days. But, it was just a day or so off a full year from my first visit so by the time I finished the 60 days my total was 120 (the first 60 now part of the previous year). Basically those days were expiring.

Arnault Bestel you'll have no problem, as long as you physically look presentable, and not poor looking, with a dirty backpack, and appearance like you haven't seen a shower. You are exactly the kind of tourist Thailand wants, and likes. You'll be fine doing what you've been doing.

No problem. Last few years came in 5 times a year only on visa exempt. Never had an extension and never been asked a question. Every year around

Damien Kindregan these things change if you haven't been here a decade like I have, so please go ask immigration. They told me last Sunday it's now twice by air annually.

Damien Kindregan I guess we all will see with upcoming changes on Sep 16th ... Last time they changed this rule was when they went from 30 to 60 days, now it's going back ... But what do I know, let the people coming in learn the hard way. Just my experience, I won't bother you guys that live with an immigration officer obviously. 🤣🤣

Damien Kindregan agree, the BKK landside transit market is one of biggest and partly where one night in Bangkok phrase came from attracting thousands a week on short hops. Unlike Dubai, Doha etc. most transit airside.
