NYC Thai Consulate — DTV Application Still Pending After 56 Business Days. Anyone Else?

-- copying and pasting from my reddit post. Only update from this is I've been told to only check the portal and Facebook messenging or email will not net an individual status check... Thus I'm still waiting! --

Hi everyone,

I wanted to share my experience applying for a Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) through the Royal Thai Consulate in New York and see whether anyone else is experiencing similar delays.

I'm a US citizen who submitted my DTV application on July 28, 2026. As of October 16, my application is still showing "Pending Approval," approximately 56 business days later.

The consulate's published processing timeframe is 30–45 business days, so I'm now well beyond that window.

Here's a brief timeline:

\- July 28: Application submitted.

\- August 3: Additional documentation requested, which I promptly provided.

\- August–September: Followed up periodically by phone and Facebook Messenger.

\- October 12: The consulate confirmed that a visa officer had sent a reminder to the consul to consider my application.

\- October 16: Still pending approval, with no decision.

I understand that visa processing times can vary and that the consulate may be dealing with a significant workload. I've tried to remain patient and respectful throughout the process.

However, the extended uncertainty has made planning my return to Thailand extremely difficult, particularly since I've already had to postpone my travel arrangements.

I'm not posting this to criticize the consulate or its staff. I'm genuinely trying to understand whether other applicants are experiencing similar delays.

Has anyone who applied through the NYC consulate in July or August received a DTV approval or rejection recently? Has anyone experienced processing times exceeding 45 business days?

I'd appreciate hearing about your experiences, especially if you can share your application date, visa type, and eventual outcome.

Thanks!

Good luck. Sorry you are going through this long period of not knowing. Since you applied they added that requirement for an FBI background check. I presume that wouldn't apply to you since you applied before then, but has anyone suggested that you submit that too in case that would help?

I applied prior to that rule applying so I doubt they'll require it. If so though, then it's nbd since it should be like a one-two day endeavor with the FBI rap sheet.

You're not alone - NYC has been the slowest of the US posts this year, and July/August was the worst window.

*What is normal for NYC:*

The official FAQ says 7 business days, but the realistic average tracked for US embassies has been 10 to 20+ business days vs 3-7 days in Southeast Asia. NYC specifically covers the northeast and parts of midwest, so the volume is huge. 4553

This summer two new rules hit at once:

1. Since Aug 31 2026 you must apply in your country of citizenship or permanent residence - so all the Americans who used to apply in Vietnam/Laos/Malaysia were forced back to NYC/LA/DC/Washington, spiking the queue

2. New criminal record check - FBI + State Dept authentication + Thai legalization - added 6-10 weeks of prep for many applicants, and consulates are handling more incomplete files 53b9

56 business days is still well beyond even that new normal. The pattern we have seen from NYC:

- After "Additional Documents Requested" the status goes to "Pending Documents Check" then "Pending Approval" - that last step is where it sits while a consul signs off. Once a visa officer sends a reminder to the consul, as you were told on Oct 12, it often moves in the next 1-2 weeks, but there is no guarantee.

- NYC has told other applicants they process partly by stated departure date, not just submission date - one applicant who went in person was told they prioritize by travel date and was approved that day. 8381

You could consider reading a book or two before your trip. I’d recommend Unlock Thailand by Isla Rey on Amazon, it includes all the info and insights you need. You should check it out. A very good companion 👌.

It took me 5 weeks to get approved at the NYC Thai consulate. Sept 12 submitted and Oct 20 approved. No additional documents requested. Hope you get an answer soon.

You are counting fro the wrong date.

It is the day you submitted the last (additional) document.

Right now is the high season for visa applications, so it can take significant longer time.

The portal still indicates pending approval?

Those status messages doesn’t tell you anything useable about when you get your application approved/rejected.

It can change both ways.

You have to read the Embassy website thoroughly and take into account the right now is high season for visa applications.

The Embassy website gives a very thorough information about processing time, see below.

Lynn Bhongsiri, apologies. Looks like they changed the wording with the new update to the portal: "Pending for decision."

Some comments in previous posts implied that the cfm usually comes 3-4 days before your travel date. In your case, if you already cancelled your flight, then I wonder what will come next! The concern with this delay may be that DTV for digital nomad deals with clear proof of your being able to work anywhere while your earning is based outside Thailand and is proven legitimate. If the documents you submitted with your application speak clearly of this ground, and you did submit required evidence of sufficient funds, then perhaps you will eventually get the visa regardless of the delay. Good luck.
