We’ve had a few people approved in Singapore. The fastest took three days and the longest one took six weeks. And yes you need a long term visa or citizenship there in order to apply.

As was intended with the DTV and technically true for many consulates in most countries. Don't know why Thai neighboring countries decided it would suffice to just be there on holiday. But I guess the opportunity for revenue was just to big in their case. :-)

Not exactly true, its never been a requirement to apply in your home or passport bearing country. There's two stipulations for application. You can't be in Thailand, and you need to apply wherever you are currently located. To be fair, money is likely exactly the reason. Its Thailand that ends up with the money since its their embassy, so its really no shocker that they made it easily accessible.

I am not exactly sure what the underlying legal text specifically says about this, right now. But I know that several European Thai consulates require either proof of citizenship or residence in order to apply there. A mere being in that country would not suffice. Maybe just one more of many inconsistencies.

Yeah, the opportunity for revenue was very tempting hence the strict rules on typos and no cash refund.
