How does visa renewal work if I enter Thailand at a different time than my scheduled departure?

If my departure and arrival date is at the end of January and of course the end of June each year. Let's say I decided to leave and enter at the end of December. How is the renewal carried out? Starting from the moment I returned for another six months? Or is it not valid at all for renewal because I did not leave on time?
