TLDR : Answer Summary
Travelers may still be asked for proof of onward travel, including return tickets, when arriving in Thailand. While airlines may be more likely to check this requirement before boarding, immigration officers at arrival can also request it. It is advisable to have a printed copy of the ticket, as phones may fail or lose battery. Some travelers have reported being asked for proof of onward travel, and in some cases, they provided a booking confirmation for a flight that hadn't been paid for yet.
You could always be asked for proof of funds, proof of onward travel and proof of lodging. Now whether you will be asked is up to the officer that stamps you in to the country.
I was asked for proof of onward travel before I left the United States on a one way to Bangkok. I had proof of onward travel with a cheap ticket to Vietnam.
