Do I need a Thai Identification Number (TIN) to open an Interactive Brokers account?

Hi everyone, this message might be relevant to some of you and I could use some advice: I’m trying to open an Interactive Brokers (IBKR) account, but they’re asking for a TIN (Thai Identification Number). The thing is, I’ve just changed my tax residency and I don’t my TIN at the moment.

Has anyone managed to get around a similar situation?

Is the TIN absolutely necessary?

I had this issue last year. The tax office wouldn't give me a tax id because "the DTV is a tourist visa not a work visa". I would have to wait 180 days to qualify under residency rules. A bit crazy. This was the first DTV that she had seen. I emailed IBKR and told them that I didn’t have a tax id yet. They said it wasn’t a problem. I could open an account and provide it later. They haven’t asked for one yet. Once I get to the 180-day mark I’ll reapply for a tax id. I’ll try a different tax office too.

Anonymous participant no, it has to be 180 days or more in a calendar year. Also being Thai tax resident doesn't mean you are not Also tax resident of another country

Just go to the revenue office and ask for a tin number. It's free. It will take up to 30 minutes.

Anonymous participant 312 here we also have a good example that for financial institutions tax residency is changed immediately when you start to live in another country, not after 180 days. 180 days is for taxes.
