My buddy's ED visa application didn't get approved by the UK's online system until two days after he arrived in Thailand. He ended up coming in on a 30-day visa exemption. Can he leave Thailand for a few days and come back to activate the ED visa?

TLDR : Answer Summary
Yes, your friend can leave Thailand for a few days and then return to activate his ED visa. This is a common scenario for individuals who experience delays in their visa applications. Upon re-entering Thailand, he should present the PDF printout of his approved ED visa to immigration officials, which will allow him to stay for an extended period, typically up to 90 days.

Yep he can.

This actually happens quite a lot

He can exit/re-enter and show that PDF print out to get stamped in for 90 days on the visa
