This may be an unusual question. We are Thailand Preferred members on long term visa but may not renew and considering converting to Non-Immigrant 0 Retirement Visa. I will have 800,000 THB seasoned already in a Thai bank account. Travel back to my home country would be difficult due to distance, age and health. Can I convert it here in Thailand? What is the process?
Answer summary
The user is considering converting their long-term visa to a Non-Immigrant O Retirement Visa in Thailand but is unsure about the process and whether they can do it without returning to their home country. Community members suggest that while it might be possible, it typically requires leaving Thailand to apply for the visa. Conditions include having 800,000 THB seasoned in a Thai bank account, which should ideally show to be from overseas. Some members recommend consulting with local immigration offices or using an agent to navigate the process, as practices vary. Additionally, applying through neighboring countries like Laos or Malaysia for the visa might also be feasible.

Your immigration office might tell you they cannot do it. Every immigration has its own practice. An agent can help. I personally recommend agents in some cases, and one case where they can be very useful is when one wants to change his or her visa's category. However, the best solution is to plan a short stay in Laos or another neighboring country in order to apply for a new visa.

If u do already have a thai bank acct....you can come in on a tourist visa and apply the initial nonO 90days inside thailand .....u need to have more than 15days on your current stamp to apply .....passport copies, bank letter/statements/book Tm30 , lease agreement and pay 2000baht they will issue a receipt and a date to go back to immigration to ink your 90days .....run your 90days down to 30 and do the 1yr extension with almost identical docs and pay 1900baht ....your choice to apply the re entry permit (single 1k/multiple 3.8k) while u are at immigration.....u don't need a agent to do this

We just came back from Malaysia and did our non O online there. If you can navigate the website, upload scanned documents then you don't need help from an agent. Ours took 2 weeks. KL was lovely. Easy to get around. Excellent shopping and food. People were very helpful.

In country you can find an agent to help with things, the cost should be less because you already have the bank open

You don't have to go back to your home country, you just need to leave Thailand to apply for the non-O visa. Laos is a popular choice but requires a visit to the embassy to pay for the application. Vietnam takes a few more days but is 100% online.

I'm not sure you would be able to apply for the non-O visa just coming off the elite visa. Even to apply inside of Thailand, you might have to leave and return on a visa exempt entry stamp. But in order to convert inside of Thailand your funds have to show as an international transfer. Can you show that your 800,000 baht came from overseas?

If you can, you would also need to ask your immigration office if they support in-country conversions to a non-O visa. Not every immigration office supports this.
