Will the immigration officer allow entry on a visa-exempt basis after getting married to a Thai citizen?

ORIGINAL POSTER
I have an American passport and I have used Visa exempt on arrival several times along with a couple of border runs to Laos since October 2023. In March 3 I married a wonderful Thai woman. I'm in America now and had an eye surgery but now I have a flight back to Thailand on June 10. My question is if I have a copy of my marriage documents and explain my situation and that I am immediately going to follow the requirements for a marriage Visa. Do you think that the IO will allow an entry on Visa exempt one more time without much problems. I realize that it's up to the IO that I will be in front of but what is the groups thoughts on my chances

Thanks for your advice in advance

TLDR : Answer Summary
An American expatriate, who has used Visa exempt entries multiple times and married a Thai citizen, questions whether he can enter Thailand again on a Visa exempt basis. Despite presenting marriage documentation, responses indicate that immigration may not consider marriage when granting entry under the Visa exemption scheme, especially given his previous extensive history of free entries. Suggestions include applying for a 90-day Non-Immigrant Visa before returning to ensure hassle-free entry.

This thread is just turning in to a train wreck. AND I can't see any upside to keeping it open

Not to mention the O/P
@David ********
hasn't responded back.

Thanx one and all for the comments (both good and bad)

Believe me, I was not trying to scare monger, I was trying to let the O/P know how it can be flying in.
@Jack *******
was correct about one thing, and that is the O/P's age will definitely count in their favor as we don't see a lot of old people milking 60 day stamps to live here

All the O/P can do is have the marriage certificate copy, have his wife's number on his phone and be ready in case they are pulled aside and questioned.

There's not a person on this or any other group/forum/reddit thread related to thailand on the inter-web who can say without a doubt that this person will skate in when they arrive here. Just hope for the best and be ready is about the best the O/P can do

yes, there are reissue penalties, refund charges, etc. on any airline ticket...if one bought a "cheap" ticket, then those type of tickets can't change dates at all....

but, it sounds like the OP wants to stay in Thailand (without having to do a Border Bounce) longer than 90 days, and, also seems that they may not have a Thai bank account yet, so, the easiest solution would be to obtain a Thai E–Visa, then try to re-book the airline ticket (with those change fees/penalties) or get a new airline ticket

much easier to just enter visa exempt then take his wife to Laos for a holiday from Chaiaphum and apply for the Non O based on marriage. Seriously doubt he will be have any problems entering visa exempt especially at his age.

@Jack *******
he might skate thru OR he might get pulled aside and questioned, and believe me comin' in free stamp with his previous entry/stay history, no matter what he's gonna do once he's here is what's going to after he gets here is what's gonna flag him

@Dca ****
not enough time if he is flying out on June 10th

if travel plans are flexible and there are no emergency/urgent circumstances, then why not change flight departure to obtain a Thai E–Visa beforehand, then, with a Thai E–Visa in hand, make entry into Thailand

I hope the OP has a bank account, I understand they are very hard to get now, and almost immposible if the applicant doesn't have a proper visa.

no Thai bank account needed to apply for a non-immigrant O visa. This is only necessary when applying for your first EXTENSION.

Sadly the fact you're married to a thai cuts no ice with immigrations when you're trying to come in to the country "free stamp" entry as a tourist, no matter what you tell them you want to do after you get stamped in

That is especially so if you have an extensive entry/stay history on free stamp entries <- which it appears you do have 😕

Why not just getting the 90 day single entry Non-Immigrant Visa based on marriage before you wing your way back here from the thai consulate in the US that serves the state you're in?

That would get you in for 90 days without any issue at all,

Then you could just work on getting the funds in place, waiting the 2 months required for it to 'season' and apply for the yearly extension based on marriage from the immigration office after that

That way you're sure to get in without any issue at all, versus fly in free stamp and hope for the best

You'd want this choice on the eVisa online web-portal when you apply

But you must show the funds in your country as wel when you ask for a 90 day single entry Non-Immigrant Visa based on marriage. Is it not beter to ask for a tourist visa and then work your way out in Thailand?

Exactly what I was thinking but it’s probably too late for the OP. In September I will be applying online from the States for a non O 90-day “retirement” visa. My plan is to do the bank and 12 month extension once back in the kingdom and I’m wondering when does the multiple entry choice need to be made? When applying for the 90 days or when applying for the 12 month extension? The latter is my guess. 🤷

Good advice. Much easier to open the required Thai bank account this way too if OP doesn't already have one.
