TLDR : Answer Summary
Several users shared their experiences of porting US numbers to Tello, mentioning that the process is generally straightforward but can be complicated depending on the previous carrier. One user noted a smooth transition from Verizon, while another faced challenges with ATT, highlighting the need for the phone to be paid off and unlocked. There were discussions about using Tello alongside Google Voice for better international call capabilities and managing mobile plans in Thailand.
I did it in the states before I left to come to Thailand in January of this year, when I had ATT, and now am with Tello on a $6/month plan that gives me unlimited text & 100 talk minutes. I haven’t barely used it because I use WhatsApp but didn’t want to permanently give up my long-time mobile phone number. It was a pain in the ass to do it even with the directions Tello gave me. I ended up having to have them on the phone to walk me thru the steps and ATT was not easy to deal with in the process. Your phone must be paid off and unlocked in order to do this. I also now have a Thailand phone number so usually work with that. Hope this helps.
I did the same…Except I also have Google Voice for making calls over WiFi when I need to call the US. I just use my Tello number for Text to receive passcodes.
I need to figure out how to port one of my Google Voice numbers over because it is just becoming more and more of an issue with banks everyone's blocking this number nowadays. Is there any carrier that allows this while not on us soil
I ported my number from ATT to an eSIM a month before moving to Thailand. Been in BKK for a year. I’m on the $5/mo plan and use it for OTPs. I also have Google voice to make calls over WiFi.
