Hello, I am retired. I live in the UK. I am married to Thai woman for over 20 years. I am looking to visit Thailand for six months then six months in UK then six months in Thailand. What is the best visa for me thanks
Answer summary
The poster, a retired UK citizen married to a Thai woman for over 20 years, inquires about the best visa option for visiting Thailand for six months at a time. Various commenters suggest several visa options including the Non-OA visa, Non-O visa based on marriage, METV (Multi-Entry Tourist Visa), and the Long-Term Resident visa for wealthy pensioners. They also discuss the processes involved, such as bank account requirements and marriage registration documentation necessary for applying for a marriage-based Non-O visa.

What gets me is if you have been married to a thai 20 years, Surely you should already know what visas are available.

Martin Smith: Consider the Long-Term Resident visa for Weathy Pensioner (LTR-P), if you have a passive (not from employment) income of more than $80,000 US.

Were you married in Thailand or, if not, is your marriage already registered at your local amphur? If not there are some steps you need to do before you can get Immigration services for a marriage Non-O such as an extension.

1. IN THE UK: Marriage certificate legalised by the FCDO in Milton Keynes (2 documents, copy of original and legalised copy)

2. IN THE UK: Marriage Certificate AND the Apostille from the FCDO translated to Thai (2 translations from 1., now 4 documents in total)

3. IN THE UK: Marriage Certificate AND the Apostille from the FCDO AND their translations verified by the Thai Embassy in London (4 verifications from 1. and 2. giving 8 documents in total)

4. IN THAILAND: All the above (i.e. all 4 documents & their translations, making 8 in total) Legalised by MFA in Bangkok

You can then register your marriage at your local Amphur as required by Immigration.

Look at Non-O based on marriage to a Thai. Was not too hard to do 👍

I don't think you can open a bank account unless you have a retirement visa

The best way for you to apply for a retirement visa with a agent but just get a retirement 0 visa from thai embassy in London you can do this on line .

And just remember every time you return to your relevant country you need a re-entry visa because if you don't you will lose your retirement visa your agent will sort that out for you

Futher to you not getting a 0 visa again your agent will sort everything out for you

Steve Bolt With a 90 day non o he can open a bankacount and deposit 400k 2 months before the visa extents.. Then you have to go to yor immigration and they will tell you which papers you have to bring for the extention of stay. Its about 50 kg of papers and fotos and bankstatements. Good luck!

Just get the non-o based on marriage when you get there open a bank account and transfer in 400k Thai baht and extend for a year then repeat every year

Bob D'Andrea This Visa needs about 50 kg of paperwork, and fotos (5) in the livingroom, while lookingTV and cleaning. Kitchen while cooking, in front of the home with house number and one of the whole house. Then you need a paper of the registration of the marriage and a bankstatement . The money has to stay at the bank 2 months before you do do the visa and it takes a month till you get it. All that you have to do every year.

Reinhard Martin It is what it is isn’t it ,if you have the funds get a non-o based on retirement

Bob D'Andrea I got, but I don't trust Thaibanks. Eventhere is no need for the 400k in the bank if you got a monthly income of

Thb a month. But I heard that American citizens dont get a statement from theire embassy. As a German it's no problem for me to get it from the consulate in Chiang Mai.

Bob D'Andrea non o you have to report every 90 days.unsuitable.
Martin *******
Martin *******
Willism69_ why unsuitable? If you stay 6 months you report once at 97days giving you another 90 days (total 187 days or just over 6 months) before reporting again. If you did stay longer, every report after the 1st can easily be done online.

Willism69_ Do a little research

Willism69_ only when you have spent 90 days continuously in the country so when you leave the clock stops and only restarts when you eneter again
David ******

Graeme Mort But he has said he wants to stay 6 months which is 180 days so will have to report
Reinhard ********

Graeme Mort But don't forget to do a reentry permit. If there isn't one the visa is lost.

Bob D'Andrea The Thailand visa process is getting so confusing. Like the gentleman in the thread i am in the same boat. 7 months in the US and 5 months in Thailand. The wife and I have been married for over 20 years and she has land and houses in Thailand. My intention is to travel over and directly go to the local immigration office to apply for the Non O visa and then get a bank account. Is this still doable with all the changes?

David Groell 5 months Thailand every year, can be done on a multi entry 6-months Tourist Visa. No Thai bank account needed other than three months of account statements of your home bank account with a minimum of $600 USD sitting in it . . . . . I really do not understand why everybody here is pushing you into the Non-Imm-O Visa direction when it is not even needed

Greg Alexander because that is the visa he qualifies for and is the correct visa in his case. He is not a tourist, he is married to a Thai. I am married to a Thai but we were married in the US and the Phuket Immigration Office took our US marriage certificate for many years, then didn't after COVID so I went back to a retirement visa. I have had a house in Rawai for 20 years and a OA or non immigrant O and extension of permission to stay based on either marriage or retirement all those years. Thailand will start accepting aposte certification starting mid February 2027 so I will probably finally register our 13 year US marriage next year. My wife has a Green Card so she can't be out of the US more than 179 consecutive days and I would have to file income taxes in Thailand if I stay more than 179 in a calendar year. I already spent 165 days this year.

David Groell No. You have to apply for the bankaccount first. So you have to aply for a 90day non o visa in your homecountry first and with that visa you can open a bankaccount. Its not possible to open a bankaccount without a longterm visa.

get the Non-O before you travel, then you can open a bank account, deposit the required funds for 2 months then apply for the 12 month extension
Bob **********
Bob **********
David Groell no you need the bank account to

apply you need the non-o to

Open a bank account

You have a number of options

The Non-OA is probably the easiest as it is good for 12 months and multiple entry, you can get 2 years out of it if you use it carefully

The Non-O based on either marriage or retirement both require you to go through the extension process inside Thailand

@John *********
How is the Non-OA nowadays as far as health insurance being required?
John **********
John **********
@Digby *******
no changes. Still 3M baht cover required
Graham ******

Digby Strong no insurance requirement for Non-O visa and extension (except the visa from RTE Madrid)
Digby ********
Digby ********
Sorry, it would have been more correct to say "extension" and Non-O
Digby ********
Digby ********
But for renewal of "O" visa within Thailand, no insurance required?

I always thought that was a bit of a weird one.
