What happens if you receive a System Alert at Thai immigration after frequent visa exempt entries?

I have been working overseas and traveling to Thailand quite often for my days off, for several years now, entering on visa exempt stamps in my Canadian passport without any issues until now ( I normally spend 10 days here at a time, not working, no business interests). I arrived at Suvarnabhumi last week and was told at immigration that I have a System Alert. The immigration official told me that next time I need a visa, because I come here so often. Any other FIFO/offshore workers had a similar issue recently? Is the System Alert a serious problem?

TLDR : Answer Summary
A user reported receiving a System Alert at Thai immigration due to frequent entries on visa exempt stamps. This alert may require frequent travelers to obtain a visa for future visits. Other commenters shared similar experiences, highlighting that frequent entries can trigger scrutiny but do not always result in immediate denial. Suggestions included applying for a Multientry Tourist Visa (METV) to avoid issues and raise awareness about an unofficial limit on the number of visa exempt entries.

Minimize the risk mate. have 20k baht in your bag, have forward tickets, have a solid address, and if possible some sort of proof of address or booking.....I hear some people take a rental contract.....but I am not sure that is a good idea for a 30 day stamp......as why would you have one on a 30 day stamp......As said people do it for years......and you are SUPPOSED to be able to do it with no restrictions.....but if you get some snotty IO who is having a bad day, they make make trouble for you for sure.......Also avoid the females in immigration (my experience).....in the long run and to avoid being nervous when you arrive, aim for a visa wherever possible.........You are youngish like me and long term visas are NOT easy to come by............if you are cashed up you could consider the 5 year 500k Elite visa, but that is a lot of cash at one time.

Out of interest where do you work?

These are the reasons people get denied entry to the country. They are the ONLY reasons to be denied entry by air. (Land crossings have that TWO 30 day visa exempt entries in a year rule)

thanks for the heads up ill be looking in to next year to set up retirement multiple entry ALOHA

@Tim ******
I'd say when they call you on the carpet for your visa exempt entries (which flag in the system by number of entries NOT by time between them :/ ) then you will have to look at other ways to say long term.

I'm not a nay-sayer but I am definitely sure it will happen to you. It's happening more and more every week it seems

sorry wrong key i do stay in other countrys for longer then a month i return to us 2 month a year
Tim *******
it shouldnt be over 6 time a year by air always as i do stay in some countrys lom

@Tim ******
You'll get called on the carpet sooner or later because of your visa exempt entry history. I can say with certainty that it WILL happen eventually.

Then you'll have to decide which way to go long term visa wise.

denial letter is no clear to read im interested as i have been going into Thailand for 28 days then to other country 28 days and back to Thailand 28 day im retired but do not want to settle down yet and enjoy all the different countrys i always have lots funds hotel set up and next country flt out do you see this as a problem

Most all the denial of entry stamps i've seen were #2's
Rob ***********
If your pulled up on arrival, do they let you enter and say get a visa next time, or do they deny you on the spot?

@Tod ********
thanks.

It hasn't happened yet, but I see monthly entry/exits on the cards.

Show them 20,000 baht in cash, show them a departure ticket.

And respectfully challenge them, or just smile and nod?
Tod *********
they give you some b/s story about how you spent too many days in thailand or came in too many times on visa exempt entries (BOTH which are NOT actual rules at all) then they sometimes ask for proof of funds, and they usually let you in after telling you you're "in the system" and will be denied entry next time.

In fact when ANYONE is denied entry for those fake reasons they can't put it on the denial of entry form (because it's NOT a real reason to deny you entry) so they put down "no funds to support themselves" (even if you DO have the 20K baht in cash. :O

I'd say if they're giving you grief stand firm, if they want to deny you entry, push it up the chain of command as far as you can, I mean you're out nothing by it at all.

Thanks for feedback. The METV would be the only thing I’m eligible for but if it keeps everyone at immigration happy, then I’m happy

Ok, makes sense. Thank you gents

@Graham ******
I mean you legally live and work in the country you're applying for it in. Meaning you hold residence there legally.

Not stay as a tourist, not visit sometimes, but have legal residence status. ALL the thai consulates in nearby countries have that requirement for a 6 month METV.

@Graham ******
Either in your own country (Canada, presumably) or in a third country, if that's where you're applying. Ex - I used to live in Laos for work and was able to get an METV there because I was resident in Laos.

When you say residency requirement, do you mean in Thailand or in another country?

I can apply in Canada. It’s a pain with my travel dates, but I can make it work. Thanks again for the quick reply’s

The closest thai consulate to here that sells a 6 month METV without a residency requirement would be the thai consulate in Perth :O Just meet the financials and they'll issue the visa no problem. None of the thai consulates in the area will issue it as they all have residency requirements, so it's either one of the thai consulates in Australia or back to your country to get it.
Tod *********
I'd agree with
@Liam ****
, perhaps look into getting a 6 month METV from the thai consulate in Canada. That visa gives unlimited 60 day entries for the validity of it (6 months from the date it's issued)

OR if you're over 50 or married to a thai you could look into getting one of those visas

I know people who work in the oil industry and they work 28 on 28 off and have been comin' here that way for years and years. Some were caught out and questioned, told to get a visa, that they were in the system and wouldn't get into the country again, BUT they didn't get a visa and were stamped in the next time without a problem. Some of the people DID get visas though.
Tod *********
They're just stonewalling you. Despite what they say there is NO official rule that limits the number of 30 day visa exempt entries you can get OR that limits the amount of time you can spend in thailand during a specific time frame.

The system "flags" passports after a number of visa exempt entries. It does NOT factor in how long you have been out of the country between entries and it only flags after a certain number.

I've been doing visa exempt entries for 2 years and never had a problem until recently - but the last two entries I was questioned quite a bit. Eventually the IO let me in when I showed him an onward plane ticket back home. A friend coming in the same day was pulled aside, told he had "too many days in Thailand over the past year" (which is bullshit since there's no such law) and forced to buy a plane ticket back home before they let him in (this was DMK so YMMV).
Michael ********
Yes I have been pulled aside and then came in again the next time on another 30 stamp. But my arse was a little puckered when I did....!!!!
Liam *****
You might want to think about getting a Multi Entry Tourist Visa if you come regularly. With this you're good for unlimited entries

Hi work in The Uk travel back here every 3 weeks had to get a visa ,,so have other guys I know ,,,
Michael ********
I have been rotating for a good few years. Been on many a 30 day stamp. I did have the occasional tourist visa when off work.....There is no real formula for when you will get stopped or not. You could get a warning this time and then come in next time with no issues at all. Really though with such a regular rotation in and out of Thailand we are not tourists, so a long term visa option should be considered. You look too young for a retirement visa right...?
