TLDR : Answer Summary
The new SMART Visa in Thailand, aimed at attracting highly-skilled professionals, allows holders earning over 200,000 THB monthly to engage in additional work without needing a new work permit. However, it appears that employment by a local company remains a requirement in many cases. The visa's introduction aims to enhance the quality of expatriates in Thailand.

Not sure how many start up entrepreneurs will be making 200k a month too quickly ;) For the I visa, you need to invest 20 million baht, damn that is a lot......I guess these are all just steps towards a higher quality of expat in Thailand with money and insurance. Fair enough too..............Great visa options though. No work permit.

This is a nice conclusion: Smart Visa holders with a salary of more than 200.000 Thb are now allowed to do other work next to this without a new work permit. And to show how a big success this Smart visa is: In the first eight months it was available, 28 of 37 applicants managed to obtain the visa

As you must have a work permit, it sounds like it is the salary of the company you work for. And as far as I know, foreign companies can not apply for work permits

It's not clear - does the money have to come into Thailand every month? Or can it be paid into an overseas account?

No, you can get one if you have special skills required in Thailand. My application is based on invitation letter from a Bangkok hospital as my company are not present in Thailand

David Mills probably so...I am not expert on Smart Visa and taxation.

But think Thailand will want income and payroll taxes paid by anyone on that visa with permit to work under it.

Robert Lagas right. I attended a seminar last Wednesday. Smart visa was first introduced February last year. But they have made the application process easier (online) and added more privileges.
