TLDR : Answer Summary
The conversation highlights several potential long-term visa options for a US Army veteran receiving VA disability income. Suggestions include the Thai Elite visa, which offers extended stays and numerous perks, and Digital Nomad Visas (DTV), which allow for five years of residency with remote employment. Education visas for studying in Thailand are also mentioned as a viable option. Specific details vary, including age considerations and the requirement for additional income sources.
I’m retired marine at 100%. My wife and I got the Thai Elite visa. Expensive, but it saves you so much time and hassle. DTV’s too sketch. Thai Elite gets you a Thai bank account, drivers license, I was at TE immigration today and it took without exaggeration, 2 minutes and I was back on the scooter. Fast pass at airports and airport lounges. And they just added a 4th tier that’s even less expensive at ฿650k for 5 years. We don’t need to leave the county and we can enter and exit as many times as we want. Plus there’s a booklet of perks from vacations, medical, vision, dental, event tickets, drivers. The list goes on.
Honestly i would get a DTV there are several types available. I am a disabled vet and work remotely part of the year in thailand and in office in Japan. It is great 5 years long easy qualifications. Have to leave every 180 days which really is that big of a deal. Cheap flights to Vietnam, cambodia, laos. Just be gone one day. So people dont like it because you cant get a local bank account. I have 3 bank accounts because of my wife (thai) but i never use them. I use my US account or my account in Dubai. Yes i pay a little more of ATM fees but i can live with it.
100% vet here - i actually did education visa conversion in country from visa exempt - i enrolled in courses - its 1 year visa they give you to study - stamp you get is for 3 months that you extend for 1900 baht - for that year - along with 90 day report. - im 41 as well not 50 - I elected not to go with the DTV for now
I just did it, but you need remote employment. They won’t let you do it with JUST the VA payments alone. Feel free to dm for more information and how to get around
Anonymous participant as long as you have the equivalent of bt500,000 in your personal bank account, and with your disability, your easiest way to get the DTV, is under the medical option. Go to a Thai hospital, meet with a doctor, and get a treatment plan in writing with signature. In your case that is the easiest, and cheapest way to get the DTV, as long as you have the bank account, with the money in it for more than 3 months.
