TLDR : Answer Summary
The OA visa can only be obtained in your home country, which is Australia in this case. An alternative suggested is to first secure a single-entry tourist visa to Thailand, open a Thai bank account, transfer 800,000 baht, and then apply for a Non-O visa and subsequently an OA extension, thus avoiding certain financial and insurance requirements.
NON-O RETIREMENT VISA RESOURCES / SERVICES
  • Go to the Retirement Visa Section for information on requirements, including age restrictions, financial requirements, and necessary documentation.
  • For immediate assistance, contact Thai Visa Centre directly via LINE at @ThaiVisaCentre or Email them.
  • Explore recent discussions by using the Non-O Retirement Visa tag in the search box at the top of the page.

I don't see the point in keeping this post open. If anyone disagrees, send a mod or admin a message.

Your best bet is to get a single entry tourist visa come here, get your thai bank account opened get your 800K baht transferred in, go apply first for a 90 day Non-O visa at your immigration office for 2000baht and then after your money has been in the bank account for 2 months and you have a month left on that 90 day stamp you got from the Non-O apply for the year extension for 1900baht.

That course of action means you don't need the mandatory health insurance for 3 million baht and you don't need to meet the 1.2 million baht financial requirements to get an O-A visa in your country

what is the best way to assure that the deposit will be shown as a foreign transfer not a domestic? Is one bank better or all the same?

The best way is to use a SWIFT transfer system. Contact the banks for further information.

How to send international transfers cheaply to Thailand is outside the scope of this group. Ask at TransferWise solution Thailand NEW 2021:

A bank to bank transfer and not using a company like Wise to do the transfer for you. Many times using Wise (or others) it’ll show as a domestic transfer.

Keep in mind to get the initital 90 day Non-O visa based on retirement inside the country the 800K baht has to be transferred in to a thai bank account in your name only from abroad. It HAS to show it came from overseas and was not a cash deposit or a domestic transfer.

It's only when you go to get the year extension using the 800K baht banked money method that there is no proof of funds origin.

You can only get an O-A in your home country.
