Hi, the Thai embassy is asking for HMRC tax returns, is this normal? What could be the reason for this? I am tax exempt as I spend less than 90 days in the UK every year.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The Thai embassy's request for HMRC tax returns can be concerning, especially for those who believe they are tax exempt due to residing in the UK for less than 90 days. Contributors suggest communicating your non-resident status to the embassy, possibly including any official documents that support your claim. This request might be aimed at verifying your income or financial stability, especially given the information provided in your visa application. Some members express confusion over the expectation of tax records from a country of which they may not have been actively involved for years, suggesting a letter of explanation could also be beneficial.

It's wild that they assume you have tax records from the country that issued your passport. I haven't had communication with HMRC in more than 10 years. I can't even remember my NI number. Maybe a letter of explanation?
Let them know that. It's a long time since I did it but is there not a form you sign for the HMRC where you declare you are non-resident in the UK for tax purposes. Show them that if possible.
