Is it feasible to transition from a tourist visa to a work visa or spousal visa while living in Thailand?

Our Visa Plans

Given the tightened immigration and work-permit enforcement in Thailand, we’d appreciate some real-world advice on whether our plan is feasible.

I will be entering Thailand on the Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) as a remote freelancer (foreign clients only). My wife will initially enter on a tourist visa for her to look for a part time teaching role, while she studies online for her teaching qualification. If she decides to teach locally, the plan would be for a school to sponsor her work permit. If she does not work and only studies, we would look to transfer her onto a spousal/dependent visa under my DTV.

Does this approach (tourist → either work visa or spousal/dependent) work in practice under current enforcement, or are we likely to run into problems with conversions, overstays, or visa runs?

We want to do this cleanly and legally from the start — any recent experiences would be very helpful. Thank you

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user's plan involves entering Thailand on a Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) as a freelancer, while their wife starts on a tourist visa to seek part-time teaching work. They inquire about the feasibility of transitioning her visa to either a work permit or a spousal/dependent visa. Responses indicate challenges, such as difficulty in obtaining a work permit without a degree and the need for a non-B visa application from her home country, highlighting the complexities of visa conversions and the potential for issues with immigration enforcement.

No idea if DTV has any capacity to support a dependent visa since DTV is not considered as long stay visa.

Based on my experience of getting a work permit & visa, even your wife found a job when she is in Thailand, she will still need to go back to her home country or residence country to apply a non-B visa (non immigrant business) from the local Royal Thai Embassy or consulate.

To apply a non-B, one of the required document is WP32 (work permit pre approval). The company who hires her will need to apply a WP32 from MOL (the Ministry of Labor in Thailand).

Good luck

Your wife will find it difficult to get a part time position that will sponsor her for the required visa and work permit. If she doesn't have a degree pretty much impossible even for a full time position. Get her to take a look at ajarn.com
