TLDR : Answer Summary
Applying for a Non-O visa may leave you uncertain about the return ticket requirement if you plan to stay long-term in Thailand. While some comments suggest that this visa category typically does not require proof of onward travel upon entering Thailand, others caution that airlines may still demand it to ensure compliance with regulations. To address this, applicants can consider purchasing a refundable or changeable ticket or a low-cost bus ticket to a neighboring country to fulfill any potential requirements.

Yes, you likely need proof of onward travel, even with income qualification for a Non-Immigrant "O" visa, as both airlines and immigration can require it. While immigration may not always check upon entry, airlines are responsible for ensuring you have the means to exit Thailand and will often check before you board. To meet this requirement, you can purchase a cheap, refundable, or changeable ticket, or even a bus ticket to a neighboring country.

Why proof of onward travel is needed

Airline requirement: Airlines are legally obligated to have proof that you can and will leave Thailand before you fly. They can be fined if they have to fly you back out if you're denied entry.

Immigration requirement: Thai immigration officials can and may ask for proof of your exit plan before you can enter.

Visa status: Non-Immigrant "O" visas are typically for short-term stays and require proof of exit within a specific timeframe, which is often 90 days.

How to get proof of onward travel

Buy a cheap ticket: Purchase the least expensive ticket available to a neighboring country, such as a bus ticket to Cambodia, says this Facebook post.

Purchase a changeable ticket: Buy a ticket with a change or cancellation policy to ensure you don't lose money if you need to change your plans.

Use a third-party service: Some services sell "onward travel" tickets that can be canceled after use, according to this Facebook post.

I want to do nonimmigrant o qualifying with income but I'm under 40 everything I've reads says I need onward travel.

Wrong. If you got a Visa (Any) the airlines and the immigration don't care for an onward or returnticket.Only the vialess entry needs a return or onward ticket inbetween the 60 day visaextention.Without that the airline doesn't even let you board the flight.

Don't worry about onward travel. The form won't ask for it. Do keep your boarding pass upon arrival, though. I've seen someone held because they threw it away.

It is written on the application from the official Thai Embassy in LA

Non immigrant visas do not require proof of onward travel out of Thailand.

If the visa application asks for travel dates, just put your intended entry date and an exit date within 90 days since it's a 90 day visa. They know this type of visa has a path to staying in Thailand long term, so it's just a paperwork routine to get it issued.

I came to Thai yesterday (October 29 2025) on a non O visa, one way ticket. Multiple entries. Nobody said a word, stamped me in and even smiled at the airport immigration.

you NEVER have entered Thailand on a "multiple entry Non-Imm-O Retirement Visa", because this type of visa got discontinued by October 2023. You rather have a "1-year Extension of the Stay Permit based on Retirement" for which you bought a multi re-entry permit for 3800 Baht
