Do I need a work permit to take advantage of the one-time import exemption for household goods when moving to Thailand on a tourist visa?

One-Time Import Exemption - Relocation

Moving from America to Chiang Mai soon. I will enter on a tourist visa, then apply for an extension of stay based on retirement.

I understand there is a one time import fee exemption for importing household goods - maybe 1/2 container.

I’m having trouble understanding if a work permit is required, which I obviously will not have. Can anyone clarify this? Has anyone done this and can comment on the experience?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The post discusses the process of moving to Chiang Mai, Thailand, and specifically inquires about the one-time import exemption for household goods when entering on a tourist visa, followed by a request for clarification on the need for a work permit. A comment highlights that only non-immigrant visa holders can take advantage of the duty-free import for household goods, indicating that a tourist visa may not suffice.

You need to have some type of non-immigrant visa. Tourists cannot bring household goods in duty free.

When we moved many years ago from Singapore we were told process has to start before you enter country and you have to show visa to start the process.

Anything shipped whilst you are in the country is considered normal shipping.

Its complicated you are likely to get stung shipping anything in anyway.

If you can avoid it, avoid it.
