Is it true that I have to be registered with a Thai phone company to open a bank account? TIA
Answer summary
To open a bank account in Thailand, it is generally required to have a Thai phone number registered in your name. This is necessary for mobile banking services, such as receiving one-time passwords (OTPs) for transactions. Additionally, you may need to provide other documentation such as a residential certificate, depending on the type of visa you hold. Some users have reported varying experiences with different banks, indicating that requirements might differ slightly by institution.

Click comment and we will ask for your email, then OTP, then name.
Yes a thai number registered under your name so u can use the bank app and receive OTP....infact u dont really need a atm card....u can use bank app to make cardless withdrawal or pay using the scan QR function
You could different answers at different banks and different locations of the same bank. One bank I had would not accept my documentation, so I had to close my account, with that same documentation, I opened up an account at a different bank .
First if only if you have long term visa , need a residential certificate or a pink card and yellow house book,
Register the thai number with the phone provider you have and then go to bank , it’s really easy to do iv open 2 different banks my self it’s that easy ,
By all means go to an agent if you want and pay their fees or save your money and go and do it yourself it isn’t hard to believe me
So people on DTV visa, what do they do? No bank account allowed - so pay the 220 ATM fee?
We are going the DTV track early next year. We have wise cards so that's ok for most things - but I guess existing DTV people just withdraw the maximum cash at the ATM & try to use wise etc where possible?
that's the best option to avoid fees. And you can bring as much cash as you're comfortable with each time you go home, paying close attention to which amounts you'll need to declare at customs if that is a concern for you
You not need a Thai phone Company to get an account! You need a Thai phone nummer, if you want to use an app or you want to know status about payment or transfer. Then it is possible to do everything online
It will be beneficial to have a Thai mobile phone number anyway especially if you are dealing with business or the bank etc.Its not like you have to give up a body part or anything just to get set-up in Thailand.I can recommend AIS they have good deals and also have good deals on the internet too also on the AIS app they do discount codes for things you can redeem to save some $$$$ it all helps! So that's a couple of advantages of the top of my head straight away!
David Rogers yes that is how they register the app but not the account itself. I opened an account at KBank two months ago without a phone number and, hence, without the app
Tone Tran she should be able to open an account without a phone. The only disadvantage is that she will have to go to an ATM or branch to do any banking instead of doing it with the mobile app.
Could anyone recommend a bank or share their experience opening a Thai bank account with a DTV visa? What documents are required, and which bank or branch is the easiest? Thank you! 🙏
Nick Collas There has been increased scrutiny over the last few months, and you need to have the phone number registered in your name at the company. Otherwise, it will be impossible to do so later, and you will end up being blocked by the bank. I’ve already seen this happen to many people.
likely a combination of that and also every bank doing things their own way. As most things go in Thailand, the best way to figure out if you can do something is to just go try and see what they say.
Daniel Graf wrong, you are generalizing. You can also get a Thai bank account opened on a 90-days Non-Imm-O visa type. You don't necessarily need a work permit or a 1-year Non-O/A Longstay Visa, on these you can, but it is not limited to these
