Can I ask it seems very hit and miss with feedback ive had , but can you buy a single flight fare to Bangkok? Ive heard immigration in Thailand may refuse you entry, also the airline wont allow you to buy a single fare ticket, im not sure when I wish to return. There are flexible tickets but can be very expensive..Anybody ?
Answer summary
The question of whether you can fly to Thailand on a one-way ticket is common among travelers. While airlines generally sell one-way tickets, many will require proof of onward travel due to immigration regulations. Indeed, while Thai immigration seldom asks for this proof, airlines often do to avoid penalties. Travelers suggest various solutions for this issue, such as purchasing a low-cost onward ticket to a nearby country or using a temporary ticket reservation service. The enforcement of these rules can vary, and experiences differ, making it advisable to prepare an exit plan to avoid potential issues at the airport.

You must have your next destination air tickets, i went Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, Laos, Thailand then back to Australia.

I asked at the airport counter why? It's each country requirements, it would be their country's burden to send you back home when you are broke

Your profile says you are in the UK. Assuming you have a valid UK passport you can buy a one way ticket to any international Thai airport. Almost any airline operating flights into Thailand will sell it to you. I buy these a couple of times a year.

To enter Thailand legally you also have to buy a ticket out of Thailand. That can be back home, or to a different country. It can be by land, sea or air.

Most airlines will check you have this before letting you board your flight to Thailand.

You can buy an "Onward Ticket" for entry and visa purposes for around £10 from several websites.

On one occasion, I got the return leg with the cheapest airline; didn’t use it. On another occasion, I paid the fee to change flight date. In 14 trips to Thailand, I was asked only once, in Sydney, about a return flight. I presume that’s because they saw I had a one-way flight booked with QANTAS. I showed them the receipt for return flight with a different airline.

Hi, its for when? I ask because they might be changing the 60 days visa exempt to only 30. So you might need a visa. It would all be easier if you do get a visa.

Its your Airlines that could ask for a return ticket or a ticket out of the country. You can fix that by buying a legit cheap flight Bangkok to Phnom Penh or Siem Reap Air Asia flies often and cheap. Do NOT buy a ticket that flys over the middle east!! Buy a direct to bangkok.

It all comes to what visa you have or don't. I always buy one-way when traveling to Thailand, but I'm not on a visa exempt nor VOA or TR visas. I haven't had troubles neither with the airline neither with Immigration. But upon check-in, when they see it's a one-way, some 80-90% of the times the airline clerk demands to see a valid visa (which I have).

Dave Cottom No it isn’t!

Yes, you can fly to Thailand with a one-way ticket, but you risk being DENIED boarding by your airline if you cannot show proof of onward travel within your visa-exempt period (typically 30–60 days). While Thai immigration rarely checks, airlines enforce this rule to avoid penalties!!!!!

Been so for ages!

It’s always first up to airline companies to check and also deny the checkin, because it’s their problem to send them back!!!!

Airline Liability: Under international regulations and Thai law, the airline that brought you to Thailand is legally required to fly you back if you are deemed "inadmissible". However, this is not a "free" service; the airline will pay the immediate cost to move you but will then bill you or seek reimbursement for the fare and any government fines they incurred.

Detention: If you cannot immediately pay for a ticket, you may be held in an Immigration Detention Center (IDC) within the terminal until you can arrange funds or a flight is secured. You will remain in custody and will not be allowed to enter the country to use an ATM outside the secure zone.

Government Role: The Thai government generally does not pay for your return flight. They simply order the airline to remove you. If you are formally deported (a different process from being denied entry at the border), the government may pay for the removal and then blacklist you until you repay the debt

Common Reasons for Denial (and why airlines are strict):

No proof of onward travel (within 30–60 days depending on your visa).

Again, ITS CORRECT!!!

what you and others done or whatever is irrelevant!
Roger **********
Roger **********
Regulation is you must have a return or onward flight.

This may (or may not) be enforced anywhere from airline check-in to Thailand immigration.

Best thing is to get your one-way ticket and then buy a cheap budget airline ticket to a third country.

I suggest you do not gamble with the regulations here, as you might get one that will want to do a detailed check or another asking for different requirements to allow you in

I've done it many times. Now it's easier as I'm on a retirement visa. But before I just told them before I caught the plane that I was going to travel to Cambodia or Laos but wasn't sure for how long and when I would return. Only once immigration in Bangkok wouldn't let me in until I showed them an exit plan. I just went on my phone and bought a ticket to Singapore. Immigration then stamped my passport and I was let in then I cancelled the ticket to Singapore. I used wi-fi at the airport to connect. The ticket was $78 Australia dollars but as I cancelled before anything went through it cost me nothing. Good luck and remember to be polite to everyone.

1 without the appropriate visa your airline may refuse boarding ( for eg

2 without a ticket back ( in the system) nobody would know if you need a visa or not?and would probably insist on one especially Th

3 authorities worldwide are aware of the "fake ( real) " ticket sites so beware of them now

5 be aware Thailand in particular is enforcing more to stop basically non- tourists using tourist exemption stamps and extensions. You could be refused on any future border bounce nowadays.

Here's a helpful, friendly response you can post or send on Facebook:

---

"Hey! Yeah, it's definitely a bit hit-and-miss with Thailand entry stories, but here's the real deal from what most travellers experience:

You **can** buy a single (one-way) flight to Bangkok — plenty of airlines sell them. However, the airline at check-in might refuse to let you board if you don't have some kind of **proof of onward or return travel** out of Thailand. This is because airlines can get fined if Thai immigration turns you away, so many of them play it safe and ask.

Thai immigration **rarely** asks for it once you're at the airport in Bangkok (especially if you're from a visa-exempt country and look like a normal tourist), but the airline check is where people often get stopped. They usually want to see a ticket leaving Thailand within your allowed stay (currently often 60 days visa-free for many nationalities).

### Practical options people use:

- Book a **cheap onward ticket** to a nearby country (e.g. Malaysia, Vietnam, Singapore, or even Cambodia) on a low-cost airline like AirAsia. You can book it for a date within your planned stay and just not use it if your plans change — it's usually only $30–80.

- Use a service like **onwardticket.com** — they provide a temporary verifiable flight reservation (valid for a few days) for around $15–20. Many people say this works fine for the airline.

- Book a **flexible or refundable return ticket** if you're worried, though yes, those are more expensive. Or book a normal return ticket with a far-out return date and cancel/change it later if needed (check the airline's cancellation policy).

If you're on a proper long-stay visa (not visa exemption), the rules are more relaxed and you often don't need onward proof.

Also remember: Complete the **Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC)** online before you fly, have your passport valid for 6+ months, and maybe carry proof of funds/accommodation just in case.

It's annoying but better to sort it before you get to the airport. Most people get through fine with one of the cheap workaround options.

Safe travels — Thailand is worth it! 🇹🇭✈️

Anyone else got recent experiences with one-way tickets to BKK?"

---

This response is balanced, practical, and reassuring without scaring the person. It addresses their exact concerns and gives clear, low-cost solutions. Feel free to tweak it with your own experiences if you've flown to Thailand recently!
