If the first 90 day report has to be done in person but the following one can be done online. BUT every 180 days you have to go in person...
Am I just stupid or does that basically mean you can't do your reports online at all?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The respondent highlights the complexities of Thailand's 90-day immigration reporting system. Initially, one must submit the first 90-day report in person, but subsequent reports can be filed online if specific conditions are met. If a visa holder has not changed their residence and remains in Thailand, they may submit the second and further reports online, provided they adhere to timely reporting rules. However, those holding a DTV may need to report in person indefinitely unless they extend their stay or leave the country.

both are correct

the second and the third can be done On-line, depending on when you done it maybe the fourth also, than you have to leave the country and start over again.
BUT if YOU, not immigration, not Thailand, YOU and only YOU decide to leave the country you start again when you enter Thailand.
To explain: If you do not wait until last day, but use day 80:
Enter day 1
report Day 80 in person
report Day 160 on-line
report day 240 on-line
report day 320 on-line
Leave before day 360.

It's all a question of timing. You can file a 90 day report up to 14 days in advance and if you do that your next report is due 90 days from your last report. So you could do the 2nd one online

Exactly, you must leave at 180 days or extend.

Yes, you're correct. 99% will leave the country and back. You'll need to report in-person the first time after each entry. Online could work if extending with immigration.

If you have the DTV you will only ever be doing it in person unless you extend your stay in Thailand.
Most people just leave and come back instead of extending.
Every 90 day report after a new arrival-stamp is supposed to be done in person.

I had planned on extending as I liked the idea of extending instead of queueing every 90 days / doing border runs.
So in theory, if I did extend (I probably won't) then I could do the following.
Example:
day 90 > 90 day in person
day 180 > extension in person
day 270 > 90 day online
day 360 > Forced to leave to reset or another 180 day extension?

Not sure if they will do the report at the same time as your extension with your type of visa.
But I do know you will need to leave after your extension. Your stay can not be extended twice. You'll need to exit once every year.
However, the current recommendation is to do a border run for a new stamp, simply because they require all the same documentation as when you first applied, if not more.
