Sorry if this has been addressed, but I am about to lose my job which means I will lose my work permit, and have to exit the country. Will I still be able to go to lao, and back again on a new visa due to the covid situation, or do I have to return to my home country?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The post discusses the implications of losing a job and work permit in Thailand, specifically asking if one can travel to Laos and return on a new visa due to COVID-19 restrictions, or if returning to their home country is required.

Once your extension of stay based on employment is cancelled, you can stay in Thailand on amnesty no later then July 31 it is unknown what will happen after July 31

In normal circumstances, when you cancel your extension based on your employment, you can apply for 7 days extension (1900 Baht).

Close. In Pre-COVID-19 times, when you cancel your extension of stay based on employment, you must leave Thailand no later then 11:59PM *THE SAME DAY*. If you apply for another extension, it will be denied, and you will have 7 days to leave Thailand.

so this amnesty does apply to non b extension of stay as well?

It is our understanding that the amnesty does not apply to any extension of stays. If a person lets the extension of stay expire or cancels the extension of stay, they will go on amnesty. Once on amnesty, you can stay no later than July 31, 2020. You can not convert amnesty to an extension of stay based on employment.

ok just so I understand. Since I'm on an extension of stay with my employment visa, if my work permit is cancelled I must leave in 24 hours, because employment non b visa extension is not included in the amnesty. Correct?

>a, if my work permit is cancelled I must leave in 24 hours, because employment non b visa extension is not included in the amnesty. Correct?

When your work permit is cancelled, you must also cancel your extension of stay based on employment. In Pre-COVID-19, when your extension of stay based on employment is cancelled, you have until 11:59PM THE SAME DAY to leave the country, otherwise you'd be on overstay.

However, the Thai government has established the visa amnesty, which waives all overstay penalties no later than July 31 because of the COVID-19 illness. Because of this amnesty, when you cancel your extension of stay, you will go on amnesty and can stay no later than July 31.
