So on 2nd July I will have had 60 days on my tourist exemption. When I extended it last time the immigration officer said I could do another 30 days bringing it up to 90 days as long as I was in the process of applying for a non O immigrant visa. Is this correct? (Earliest non O appointment I could get was 18 th July! )
Also if you do a border crossing do you have to stay overnight out of Thailand or can you come straight back in again?
There's probably a very easy answer to both these questions.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is inquiring about extending their tourist visa exemption in Thailand for an additional 30 days while they apply for a non O immigrant visa. They were previously informed by an immigration officer that this was possible. Additionally, they seek clarification on the rules for border crossings—specifically whether an overnight stay outside Thailand is required before returning.

Also in order to apply for a non-o visa you must have a minimum of 15 days left on your current stamp, 21 days in some places. I see a border bounce in your future, followed by another 30 day extension
There must have been a miscommunication somewhere, because visa exempt can only be extended ONE time. If you've already applied for your extension then you cannot apply for another one.
There is no requirement to be out of Thailand any amount of time, but some borders may require it. You should either use a border bounce agency that will drive you to the border and make sure you get out and back in, or make sure you avoid the Poipet border if you want to do it yourself.
