Hello ladies and gentlemen, I'm new to the group. I have a question. My husband and I are planning to retire in Bangkok, Thailand. We are in the U.S. My husband is retired disabled military veteran. How do we apply for one year retirement visa? The official Thai visa site doesn't show an option for more than 60 days. Which retirement visa would you all recommend?

Thanks in advance for your help
Answer summary
The user seeks advice on applying for a one-year retirement visa for themselves as they plan to retire in Bangkok, Thailand. Community responses indicate that they should apply for a Non-O single entry visa valid for 90 days, which is available for individuals over 50 years of age. They should apply for this visa through the Thai Embassy in the U.S. about 30-45 days before departure. Upon arrival in Thailand, they will have to set up a Thai bank account and deposit 800,000 Baht per person (or alternative financial options may apply for couples) within two weeks to qualify for a one-year extension. It's also mentioned that a Non-OA visa is an option but comes with more requirements.

Joiner Man Most disabled Veterans aren’t in wheel chairs. Some are but the vast majority are not.

Thomas Servais thanks

Its just that Bangkok streets and roads are not good for anyone bad on their feet or in chairs

Used to take old grandma in her chair, but spent more time walking on the dangerous roads due to the poor condition of the pavements/sidewalk

But enjoy it

Biggest question is how old are you, except for certain specific situations both the Non-O and Non-OA visas require you to be 50 or older. For younger people the options are extremely limited and expensive.

As mentioned

The starting point for the most common long term Visa

Is a Non-O Single entry

90 day Visa

On the Thai Embassy website , this is what you are looking for

For over 50 years of age 100% easier & cheaper to apply for a Suitable retirement Visa from your home country through the Thai Embassy website ( All done online )

When you are ready to come - Apply for a Non-O 90 day single Visa from the Thai Embassy in your home country about 30-45 days before departure.

When applying online you will need to show the required funds in any bank account , some personal details & Flight details & proof of first weeks accommodation .

Once approved & arrive in Thailand you have 90 days to organise for the 12 month extension

No.1 requirement is

Within 2 weeks of arrival You need to set up a Thai bank account & deposit 800K Baht , per person , for at least 60 days to satisfy the extension

Go to the bank of choice & ask them what they require to open a bank account

You can also come to Thailand on a tourist Visa & get it converted to a Non-O retirement Visa for a much higher cost

Ant W Tailor Why not a tourist visa ,get extension and then do the rest of what you posted?

Rick Borelli What you suggested is not possible anymore, unless you already have a Thai bank account with 800,000 THB already sitting in it. A handful of agents would get around the existing laws, however their price starts at 60,000 THB for such a service

You don't apply for a 1-year retirement visa. You apply for the 90-day non-O visa based on being over 50. Then once you get to Thailand you open a bank account and transfers 800,000 baht into it for each of you, and then uses that to apply for 1-year extensions at the immigration office.

I thought if you are a married couple you only need to show 800,000baht (not each?)

Nearly impossible to get a trailing spouse non-O visa nowadays. It's not available inside of Thailand, and embassies will not sell it if the primary spouse gets a non-O. SOME embassies (not all) will allow it if the primary gets a non-OA, but then they're required to keep mandatory insurance forever, along with the much greater application requirements for the visa.

shouldn't they be able to a apply for non 'OA' retirement visa in their home country?

Takiep74 the Non-O/A is not the "real" Retirement Visa. The Non-O/A is the "Longstay Visa". It comes with a totally different setup as the 90-days Non-O Retirement Visa, and more people opt for the O rather ttahn the O/A visa

Takiep74 yes but 99% of people don't want that visa

Takiep74 You can apply for either an O or OA. The OA requires health insurance. They both lead to 1 year extensions. Most people these days prefer the O. There is no reason for your visa to be tied to your health insurance.

Graham Seal you said it: MAYBE 😄

Marty Pollard the benefit for some with the Non-OA is that the spouse may be able to get a deprendent Non-O so there only one 800k required not two
