I love how they refute the fake news but don't clarify the real position which led to the misunderstanding.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion revolves around the rules of visa-exempt entries in Thailand, emphasizing that there is no restriction on the number of entries within a year but cautioning that immigration officers assess a traveler's history. Key points include the lack of a reset or calendar year rules, with allowances for extensions on visa-exempt entries being limited. Concerns were raised about conflicting interpretations and the implications for travelers who wish to limit their stay duration.

*** There is no "reset".

*** There is no mention of "calendar year".

*** There is no two-times limit on visa-exempt entries within a one-year period.

In case you have heard such drivel from out of the mouth of an Immigration officer, this officer will soon learn that what he said just can’t be true.

What actually counts is: There are only two extensions on visa-exempt entries possible, within a 1-year period.

The first extension will be issued for 30 days, the extension for a second visa-exempt entry will be issued for 7 days

You can theoretically do 4, 5 or even 6 visa exempt entries for short 2-3 weeks holidays, within a one-year period, if you never maximize each stay.

Of course, upon each entry, you should be able to proof your onward travel, a few nights of a booked accomodation and proof of cash equivalent of 20,000 THB

You should refrain from thinking in terms of "calendar year"

I would rather say that all visa-exempt stays within the recent "1-year period" will be considered when you attempt another visa-exempt entry

Just think about it, if a “calendar year” count would be in effect:

This would allow 157 days BEFORE New Year, and 157 more days AFTER New Year, totaling in a 304-days consecutive visa-exempt holiday inside Thailand.

The mind boggles.

Do you really believe that a Thai Immigration officer in January or February looks up the amount of visa-exempt stays within a "calendar year" (none yet) and ignores all the days of your visa-exempt stays within the previous year?

It won't make much sense.

But they do if you read the article. There is no restriction on the number of times you can enter Thailand visa exempt.

However visa exempt is for tourism not for living in Thailand so assessing your history inside Thailand is an important part of an immigration officer job

would be great if they specified abit more to make it 100% clear and hard to make misunderstanding tho. They dont say anything about days etc. Just that its not about times they enter.

it isn't about days, its about history and how that history looks to an immigration officer

Unfortunately, the clarifications have not removed our worries about a 100% legit possible tourist road trip into Laos and back. There appears to be no way to avoid that we are granted a new 60-day visa exempt upon returning, and that might cause later trouble for us. We would prefer to keep just the original 60-days limit, but there appears to be no way to opt for that?

if you want to spend longer inside Thailand than the time offered with a visa exempt entry then it's probably best to get a visa that covers the purpose of your stay

...which is absolutely not our situation (actually the opposite, we do not WANT the extra days granted when reentering from Laos).

"The Immigration Bureau continues to enforce existing measures, including enhanced screening of foreign nationals who frequently enter and exit the Kingdom in a pattern consistent with visa-run behavior" is what they say. Previously they have given other examples and also said 2nd exemption extension would be only 7 days. But they have clarified half of what they should.

Gregory Kleiman they've clarified it. There is no 2 entries a year limit. The enhanced scrutiny is aimed at deterring the "visa free border bouncers" living in Thailand with no visa.
