What is the cheapest visa to get for a couple wanting to live in Thailand for the next five years sporadically, like 3 months to 9 months a year. Would it be cheaper to just stay 30 days and extend and do visa runs to neighboring countries or apply for a retirement visa or some kind of digital nomad visa or something else I haven’t considered? Cheaper the better is our priority. We don’t mind traveling and living in neighboring countries.

bottom line is Thailand doesn't want foreigners to stay longer than 30 days. all surrounding nations have a more friendly visa system. I've been to all of them. I love Thailand but not more than Laos or Korea or Japan. The first thing Thailand needs to do is phase out the weed curse on the land.

Thai is broken. go to the Philippines. you can stay for 3 years on one visa for $200

Multiple entry, 6 month tourist visa. That’s what I do. Just have to leave the country a couple times. Takes like 15 minutes online and you’re done . You’re only allowed to stay in Thailand for up to two months then you have to leave and come back. i hear stories all the time about Farang Running across the border to get a stamp and come back . Trying to undermine the system is just ignorant.

There’s a digital nomad visa bro that exactly fits that description lol valid up to 5 years, allows you to come and go sporadically etc

Decide what you want. Then choose a matching visa.

3 months per year is (right now) visa exemption plus extension (60+30 days). Cost: negligible.

9 months: you need a long term visa like nonO (if you qualify, its extensible forever) or DTV (5years) or LTR. It all depends on you (age, wealth, wants, needs).

Detail: staying 180+ days per year makes you a tax resident (in about every country) and you probably don’t want that.

it appears that I have to apply for my DTV in my home country, USA, where I am at. Just thought I would do it myself.

Cheaper is almost never better. Go for good that meets your situation and then look at the price. There are up and downsides to all visa's.

We not need more cheap charlies

A 6 month multiple entry visa may suit if you are planning on around half your time in Thailand and half in your home country

If you plan to do it repeatedly, then DTV. METV doable, but you would have to apply every year. And repeatedly doing 9 months on METV might cause issues after a couple years of repeating.

For only 3 months, visa exemption if you qualify (as long as it stays 60 days)

did, just wanted some opinions

You won't get away with doing visa runs for very long before being denied entry. The cheapest will depend on you, your ages etc.
