TLDR : Answer Summary
Foreigners wanting to open a bank account in Thailand often face bureaucratic hurdles and documentation requirements. Generally, banks require a lease agreement, passport, type of visa, and a utility bill (like electricity or water). However, some users suggest that using an agent can streamline the process, while others mention that having a work permit or being sponsored by a resident can also ease account setup. Recent regulations have made it more challenging for banks to open accounts for foreigners due to money laundering concerns, but residency certificates may still be a key document in the process.
a few years back the government issued stern warnings to banks (counter money laundering and fraud)... and bank officers get very nervous opening accounts for foreigners without good paperwork (this country runs on bureaucracy)... but, hey, it's thailand and someone will tell you they did something no problem. I have a house registration and marriage visa and had to insist they open my account... they said 'no can do' probably 6 or 7 times... I sat down, said call headquarters.... heh heh
Most banks require a residence certificate. Just opened a second account and that was one of the documents they wanted. First account a few years ago was a lot easier.
