Hi I'm thinking of moving to Thailand long term and wondering what the best options for visa I'm 46 I have seen you can you learn Thai and stay for a year any advice would be greatly appreciated thank you 😊
Answer summary
The user is exploring long-term visa options for relocating to Thailand at the age of 46. Suggestions include the Digital Nomad Visa (DTV) which requires a certain financial threshold, and the potential of the Thailand Privilege Visa as a costly but legitimate option. Additional advice mentions eligibility for retirement visas at age 50, the limited duration of education visas, and the possibility of finding work or marrying to obtain a long-term visa.

You can come on tourist visa and just about any Thai girl will marry you after 15 minutes you land at the airport. Long term visa sorted.

Elite visa I think is your only legitimate way but don’t think you will be able to work and it’s very expensive. Maybe a digital nomad job??

Bridge the gap until you are 50 with :

LTR --> if you can not meet the requirements, then...

Elite/Privilige worryfree but at a cost.

DTV with some drawbacks

You mentioned some working ?

Need more info on that, because that would impact your choice of visas - if at all possible.

Thailand Privilege or DTV.

If you are rich, LTR is also a very good option

Under 50 and long term

You can only try and apply for a DTV - but it has requirements

For starters Equivalent of 500,000 baht in any bank account in your name

You are only going to get about a year on an education visa. I don’t know if you can use Thai language school for a DTV.

I know people that used the 5 year privilege visa to bridge the gap

Once your 50 you can apply for a visa based on retirement, but you have 4 years you need to cover until then. How will you support yourself while you are in Thailand?

Richard Heywood it is called the ED visa, you get with the documentation from the school you buy classes from, then, even though it is one year, you must extend it every 90 days with the documents the school gives you showing you are going to classes, and making acceptable progress, and, you can not legally work on it. If you actually want to learn the language, get the ED visa to do it, and then have a much better chance of getting a legal job, is to take the Thai language program at Chulalongkorn university in Bangkok. It is an intensive five month program designed to get you speaking, reading, and writing, Thai on a regular five day a week university schedule. This language program gets you up to speed faster than any language school, and in an academic setting. The better you speak, and read, Thai, the better chance you have at some very interesting jobs in Thailand. You want to stay in Thailand, and at your age this is the best way. You're not done working yet.

if you are going to work remotely from Thailand there are only 2 visas that legally allow this, the LTR Work From Thailand Professional which it sounds like you won't be able to qualify for, or the much easier to acquire DTV based on Workation. If you plan to work inside Thailand I'd think again unless you have a particular skill that can't be served by Thais

I know that you can't work on it, and that you have to sign up with a language school who will provide the paperwork you require to get the initial visa. You also have to extend the visa every 90 days which depends on your attendance at the school.
