TLDR : Answer Summary
If you stay in Thailand for more than 180 days within a calendar year but have no assessable income, you typically do not have to file taxes for the previous year. Tax obligations depend on your residency status and the type of income you receive. Starting from January 1, 2024, changes in the interpretation of assessable income may affect your filing requirements going forward.

start reading: more then 180 days in a YEAR.

It's NOT: stay 180, and after a week you come back and another 180 days start. Nope

If you do not like to pay any tax than the solution is stay not more 170 day's in one country. Example. Go 30 day's holiday and 170 day's in your country and 170 day's in Thailand and live the tax free life !

Only if you have an income in Thailand 🇹🇭

foreign earned income is also assessable

US military pensions and disability benefits should be exempt, correct? As well as school benefits? (for example the US government pays for my education due to my prior military service + gives me a monthly housing payment as another benefit). All these that I mentioned are not taxed in the states due to them NOT being considered actual income, simply pension/compensation/disability/education

you would need to dive into the Thai Revenue Code and the DTA agreement with your particular country to establish what is or isn’t classed as assessable income.

Just leave Thailand go for a day trip to Malaysia and your 180 days start again

@Nicholas ***********
nope, doesn’t work that way. It’s 180 days in any given tax year.

@Nicholas ***********
it's 180 days during the year, not consecutive.

noooo. It is based on total days in a calendar year

Or, maybe you were being sarcastic…

If you become tax resident in Thailand then you are required to file a tax return only if you have assessable income above certain minimal thresholds. The requirement to file a tax return has not changed. It has always been the case for tax residents. For this year you should have filed your return for 2023 by 1st April or electronically by 9th April. From 1st Jan 2024 the interpretation of what is assessable income was modified by the Revenue Dept. That is all that happened.

you can ask to be issued a Thai Tax ID number from the revenue department on your location. But you don't have to file anything before January 1st, 2025. The annual tax for 2024 then needs to be declared until May 30th, 2025

Tax will start for 2024 calendar year. So nothing to report for 2023 even if you did stay there more than 180 days in 2023.

the tax law hasn’t changed if you didn’t file a Thai tax return in the past your not going to need too now unless you have taxable income in Thailand or earned it and brought it in

You need to consult a Thai tax expert not a Facebook group. Everyone's financial situation is different.
