TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion revolves around the use of a valid Myanmar driving license in Thailand for self-driving, specifically for a trip from Bangkok to Chiang Mai. Opinions vary on whether an International Driving Permit (IDP) is necessary. Some users suggest that due to ASEAN agreements, a Myanmar driving license should be acceptable, particularly if it is in English. Others caution that despite this recognition, car rental companies may still require an IDP, and it's advisable to check their policies beforehand. Additionally, there are warnings about possible penalties for driving without an IDP in case of police stops or accidents.
I believe there is an ASEAN agreement where each country recognises each others licences

Depends on the copper if your licence is a photo licence in English. But if you are in tourist places they will ask for it and fine if you dont have it.

I’ve heard that Myanmar is unable to issue an IDP under the Geneva Convention, so it may be difficult to drive legally in Thailand
I still using IDP in Thailand and already confirmed with land and transport authority,
Myanmar IDP is still recognising under Geneva Convention.

After further checking, I found conflicting information.
Wikipedia lists Myanmar as a contracting party to the Vienna Convention on Road Traffic (1968), but the official UN/UNECE list does not include Myanmar.
I’m genuinely confused — could someone clarify why there is such a discrepancy?
no he doesn't - Myanmar is a signatory to the ASEAN Agreement on the Recognition of Domestic Driving Licences - no IDP required in Thailand for member countries.
