Can I enter Thailand on a visa exempt entry and apply for a retirement visa based on my Thai Elite visa expiration?

I left after my Thai Elite visa expired in March. Now I am coming back in September to apply for a retirement visa in Chiang Mai. Questions:

Can I just fly with a visa on arrival, apply for a NON-O in CM and then apply for the retirement visa?

Do I need proof of a planned return flight? If so, will April 2023 be accepted?

I have had a thai bank account for many years with more than 800.000 THB in it due to a house sale a few years ago. Will this be accepted? Or do I have to show more money in my German bank account?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user plans to return to Thailand after their Thai Elite visa expired to apply for a retirement visa in Chiang Mai. They inquire if they can enter on a visa exempt entry, apply for a NON-O visa, and later a retirement visa, as well as if they need proof of a return flight and the acceptance of funds in a Thai bank account originally from abroad. Responses clarify that they should enter on a 30-day visa exempt entry, apply for the NON-O visa early, and be aware that proof of income must meet specific regulations depending on the source.

If you have a German pension and get more income then

baht per month you can also use a income statement from the German embassy in Bangkok.

What is the difference between applying for a retirement visa outside or in Thailand? Isn't it easier to apply in another country (I am currently abroad anyway)?

very very summarised comparison.

look at the requirements for the consulate you're applying for the 90 day Non-O visa at. SOME require health insurance,

Just come in on a visa exempt, get the letter from your embassy, get over to the Chiang Mai immigration office and apply for the 90 day Non-O for 2000baht, go back 3 weeks later get the visa and a new 90 day stamp inked in, wait 2 months go back and apply for the year extension for 1900baht.

That is the easiest and most trouble free way to pull it off

Thanks! I called the German Konsulat in CM. They do it there, too and you can wait for it (you need to make an appointment)

I did not know if the german embassy here issued the affidavit of income from abroad notary letter (y)

you definitely need to get right over to your immigration office to see if they will require that the 800K baht you have banked here now can be used without showing it came from overseas. That is totally going to be their call. I know in Bangkok you have to show the 800K baht banked money came from abroad or you can't use it for proof of funds. I've actually seen people have to transfer it out and back in to meet that requirement 😕

okay first off you can't get in on a "visa on arrival" 😕 You're talking about coming in on a free 30 day entry stamp because of the nationality you are, and that's a visa exempt entry NOT a visa on arrival

With that being said

You can come in on a 30 day visa exempt and then go to your immigration office in Chiang Mai and apply for first the 90 day Non-O visa based on being over 50 (retirement) for 2000baht and then when that stamp runs down the year extension for 1900baht.

Keep in mind Chiang Mai needs a MINIMUM of 21 days left on your current entry stamp or extension of it to apply for the in country Non-O visa because of the under review period. SO that means when you get back in, GO to the immigration office get the hand out listing the requirements and apply before you run out of time on your entry stamp.

As long as you can show the money originated from abroad originally you should have no issues. BUT talk to them and see. Unless the german embassy here issues an affidavit of income from abroad notary letter you cannot show proof of funds in your account in Germany, it has to be here

It depends on your air carrier whether you will need onward travel coming in visa exempt. It is highly unlikely you will be asked for it when you stamp in visa exempt once you land here. Check with your air carrier

recent reports that candian airlines are incredibly strict on this requirement. So plan ahead to make sure you can meet it by purchasing a cheap bus or train ticket to a neighboring country, or Google "onward ticket" for available options.

I spoke with the Thai Consulate in Vancouver and they wouldn't accept a land boarder exit and require a paid flight itinerary... I'm not sure why at this time things are being made so difficult?
