Hello everyone,

I'm not in Thailand yet, but I'm hoping to move when I retire in a few years.

One question: I've read that you may not do volunteer work with a Retirement Visa as it's considered work. Is this true? If true, do people defy it or is that too risky?

Thank you in advance to anyone who can answer:)

TLDR : Answer Summary
The Retirement Visa in Thailand prohibits any form of work, including volunteering, as it is considered to take a job opportunity from Thai citizens. Although many individuals still engage in volunteer activities, doing so carries risks such as potential deportation or being banned from the country if a complaint is filed. It's advisable to check with local authorities for specific volunteering approvals to avoid issues.

There are some volunteer activities that appear ok without a volunteer visa. Always check first with your local Labour Office, and get written, signed, stamped confirmation I guess. Careful about doing one volunteer role that has been approved and then stepping outside exactly what was approved because it is only ammunition if someone wants to lodge a complaint or try to earn some baht from making your good intentions into a bad thing...

Retirement visas are work prohibited. You can't get a work permit and volunteering is considered work

Is it true? Yes, it's true. Volunteering is considered work, taking a potential job from a Thai person.

Lots of people still do it.

Is it too risky? That's up to you decide. If someone complains, you could potentially be deported/banned from Thailand. Not likely, but it's possible.

id like to think it depends on what you’re doing as volunteer work. It seems that if you’re rescuing dogs, or handing out food to needy people or picking up trash on the beach, that the authorities wouldn’t just deport you without a warning first. But I honestly can’t imagine someone having an issue with things such as that period.

Now…if you’re teaching English or building houses for the needy, I can see how there might be an issue. But I’m not even in Thailand full time yet.

Following.

maybe you "rescue" a dog some Thai person considers theirs.

Maybe a local food vendor considers your handing out free food as stealing their business.

Maybe a Thai person that collects recyclables from the beach doesn't like your cleaning up as it eats into their income.

Everything has 2 sides. Just because you consider something only beneficial doesn't mean everyone will see it that way. And Thai people are the ones you have to worry about complaining as they are the ones the officials will take seriously.
