TLDR : Answer Summary
To get US government checks directly deposited into a bank account in Thailand while on a retirement visa, it's suggested to have the checks deposited into your US bank account first, and then transfer the funds to your Thai account. Alternatively, you can open an account at Bangkok Bank and inform the Social Security Administration's Federal Benefits Unit at the U.S. Embassy in Manila for direct deposit of Social Security payments. This setup allows for timely deposits, as benefits are received on the same day as they would in the US.

Have to open account at Bangkok Bank then inform Social Security in Social Security Administration's Federal Benefits Unit at the U.S. Embassy in Manila.

yes and it arrives the same date / day as it would have in US. I opened a seperate ‘direct deposit’ savings account in Bangkok

Bank into which my SS arrives.

So it is not possible to put , say, $10,000 in bank and just spend down and replenish? Thanks for help

@Fran ****
yes, you can transfer with Wise or another option of you like to a Thai bank and then refill as you go from your US bank. That's what many do.

Have them land in your US bank, then transfer them to your thai bank on your own.

@Jac***
that defeats direct deposit with retirement visa is my understanding and fees are then involved if done per your suggestion. Perhaps there is information I do not have

One last question: I did submit all paperwork for that amount ,from bank in US , etc for proof of investment funds which is on record

the fees with wise.c๐m are pretty reasonable. Other money transfer services exist with cheaper fees (e.g. Remitly) , but they *won't* show up as an international transfer when the money lands in your thai bank account. Only wise.c๐m guarantees this

there is no "direct deposit" requirement for the retirement visa. The only requirement is that it shows as an international transfer. I know, I've obtained retirement visa extensions using the monthly method.

There are, though, a couple things to watch out for. I use wise.c๐m to transfer the money. For this to work for 65k baht transfers, your thai bank must be SCB or kasikorn or bangkok bank. You must choose "funds for long stay in Thailand" as the reason. This only shows up on the wise.c๐m desktop site, so you have to use a computer. Make your transfers during the first week of every month, so you have time to make additional transfers if something goes wrong. Check your thai online bank website to ensure each transfer is listed as international when it lands in the thai bank account

what I have been doing is taking from my atm withdrawals abd then bank deposit

that won't work for the visa. If the bank statements don't say international transfer, it won't count. Alternatively, you can maintain 800k baht balance and not have to worry about this.

@Fran ****
you never want to let the banks handle your monthly deposits because if you switch to using the monthly income method for retirement visa and you don't manually do the transfer, eventually it's going to get screwed up and you won't be able to get your extension the next year.

You have to show the transfer every single month, and there are many reasons this can be broken.

Holidays causing the transfer to be a few days early or late.

Technical glitch causing the same.

Budget or government shutdown causing checks to not be issued for a few weeks.

It's just not worth the risk to let them handle it. Do like Jackie said and do it yourself so you know it's correct.

Take the advice of

. Maintain your own control over the monthly transfers. Take your eye off the ball for one moment and you can rest assured there will be a stuff-up, and sadly Thai immigration are very anal about the monthly transfers.
