DTV Workation, EU Citizen, remote business started few years ago.

5th May - I arrived to Hanoi

8th May - I applied for DTV for workation

13th May - status changed to pending approval

15th May - rejected (no reason given). I went to embassy and asked them personally, after she checked my document, she said - "Change an embassy". That was a bit ridiculous but I did what she said.

23rd May - I arrived to Vientiane (Laos)

24th May - I applied again

26th May - I was asked for an additional document which I provided but in better quality (passport bio page)

26th May after about 1 hour - status changed to pending approval

26th May after another 1 hour - I was invited for interview

5th June - Interview and visa approved.

Interview Question:

* What kind of plans do you have to spend time in Thailand?

* Show me account with your invoice payments

* Show me account where you have a balance over 500k

* Show me what do you do, examples of your work

Key tips:

* Dress well, be polite and elegant, very important thing in my opinion

* Take your laptop or print everything what you have provided

* Double check if your mobile apps are working to show your statements or bank balance

* Smile (yes, really), don't go there like you would go to jail, this helps in my opinion

I hope that will help other people.

Hmmm - you must be replying to someone else. I made no comment about income affidavits or the combination method.

Sorry to say, but if she can't afford to follow the rules, then perhaps it's best she stays at home.

Something that gets missed quite regularly, the 800,000 must be seasoned for 2 months prior to the first extension, during the extension period leading up to the second extension, the funds must not drop below 400,000 at any point during the period of extension and must again be at 800,000 for a minimum of 2 months prior to the following extension..

I really recommend getting the Non O based on retirement in your home country. With that you should be able to open a bank account, avoid Bangkok Bank. When open deposit the 800k and when it's been in there 2 months you can start the process to get the 12 month extension of stay. You will need the proof from the bank you have the money deposited for the required time. All you need will be the TM7 form with all the photocopies required etc and its 1,900 baht. If you dont have the 800k available to deposit in the bank, you will have to use an agent to provide the funds. In Pattaya it's 12,500 to 20k, no idea how much in Hua Hin. Either way getting the Non O at home and opening an account before visiting an agent is still the best way. Many offices do not like the combination method as its too complicated.

Jim Skinner we didn’t wanna do it that way because my mother might have difficulty with the background check. She had a felony charge years ago that was sealed or expunged, but it has shown up on reports in the past

Naomi McKenzie there is no background check on getting a Non O visa in your own country. You are thinking of a Non OA where a police check is required.

It does not take a month to process any application. Retirement extensions are processed and issued the same day you apply. You are correct that the timing can be tight, but you have about a month to get the account opened an funded, not a day. Once the money has been in the account for 2 full days, you can then go immigration and apply for the extension, even if it's the last day of your entry stamp.

And even if it wasn't processed in the same day, like marriage extensions, you receive an "under consideration" stamp that will tell you when to come back. That stamp is a temporary extension which normally goes past your existing permission to stay. You only need to apply for the extension before your permission to stay ends, not receive it.

thanks for your reply! I gather from this that you are well-informed, so I would like to ask you a few questions if you don't mind. I will be in this situation myself August next year, but for a marriage extension. Now I am wondering if it wouldn't be better to go for the pension extension for the first extension and only apply for a marriage extension the year after. That 800K THB is no problem at all, so neither is the 400K for a marriage extension. The point is that immigration takes longer to issue an extension based on marriage. I wonder how much longer. Would it be easier to open a bank account as someone married to a Thai national, or is there no difference? It is still a long time between now and August next year and al lot can still change in Thailand, but I am looking into everything right now anyway. Thanks!

you are the one who specifies what extension you apply for. Immigration would prefer you to apply for retirement because it's MUCH easier for them too.

doesn't the extension form just ask if you are married or not? If I were to tick 'no' to apply for a retirement extension, would I be lying, and wouldn't that have consequences? On the other hand, they can always come by and ask for proof. We have nothing to hide and have been in a relationship for 23 years. So we have enough proof that it isn't something fake. But it is still worth considering going for the retirement. Thanks again!

It's actually more difficult to open an account if you are married. Better to not mention to the bank staff at all that you are married or they will require your wife to be with you and provide a bunch of paperwork. Everything about retirement extension is easier. No home visit, no under consideration period, issued same day. If you switch to marriage then your wife will be required to be there every extension with you, there will likely be a home visit each year, you need to get witnesses to sign forms to attest that you are married, and you'll need photos and other items that are not required for retirement extensions.

You definitely cannot do the monthly income method in the first year so forget about that as an option. But that is not the initial problem. The first problem is opening a bank account at all because Thailand’s banking system presents a major catch 22 in this regard. Currently, if you walk into a Thai bank without an agent, most banks will not let you open a bank account unless you already have a non tourist visa (meaning at least a retirement visa -12 month visa extension) yet you cannot get a non tourist visa unless you have 800,000 baht in a bank account. It used to be that you could open an account on a tourist visa (or even a visa exemption), but nowadays you simply cannot. The Thai banking system started implementing new rules in this regard last year to cut down on the large volume of accounts being used in scams and other criminal activity. I don’t know if this helped the problem any, but this is the way it is now. You need an agent to help you get the bank account, and you are best served having them take care of the rest of it for you as well, as there are other requirements that have to be met and many immigration offices have their own unique “rules” that have to be addressed. Since you guys are planning on staying in Thailand long term it’s best not to have your introduction to life in Thailand to be trying to navigate through a complex, chaotic and continually changing visa system. Well worth it in the long run to have an agent take care of it all for you. After you guys have been here for a while and have learned the ropes, you might decide to do it on your own, but even then you might conclude it is not worth the hassle. You can be the source of the 800k, so that is not an issue. But, if in subsequent years you decide to try to use the 65,000 baht monthly method there could be problems proving that your mom has an income sufficient to meet the requirement because her SSI is only 1300 USD/43,000 Baht. I take it that it would be your intent to supplement it monthly but I do not believe that would be accepted as a reliable source of consistent monthly income. I am not positive about this, but I raise it so you can follow up on it. Another logistical thing to keep in mind is the recent change in the length of visa exempt stay from 60 days to 30 for most countries. You can get a 30 day extension for a total of 60 days in country but that does not leave you a lot of time to get the retirement visa/open a bank account problem sorted. Therefore you should plan on addressing this immediately upon entry, or begin the process before arriving. Now to get more technical, the best path is to apply (with an agent, in my opinion) for the 90 day non immigrant O visa either before coming to Thailand or after entry (on a visa exemption). Then you apply (again, with the agent) for the 12 month extension of stay/retirement visa. If you apply within Thailand you do not have to meet the requirements of providing a background check document nor do you have to show proof of Thai insurance. Good luck!

Greg ODea a US citizen will never be allowed the combination method. The only people I know that are allowed, are using the income affidavit from their embassy plus the deposit part. A US citizen cannot use an income affidavit. There is no Immigration that allows to combine a 12-months of transfers bank statement with a deposit. Never ever heard or read of one US person who is doing this

there is no catch 22. You're meant to get visas from embassies. You get the non-O from the Thai embassy before traveling to Thailand and use that to open a bank account.

which banks will open a bank account with a 90 day non O?

Take your pick. Kasikorn, Bangkok Bank, SCB, Krungsri, Krunthai

Greg ODea all of them. The 90-days Non-Imm-O Retirement Visa gets you a bank account opened on all Thai banks. There is nothing such as a "non tourist visa". Your wording and large parts of your advice is totally screwed up

Use an agent for first year approx 50,000 open bank account first ensure 65,000 in bank every month then use that for second year

Martyn Goddard..won't work....the second year will have to have shown 800k..for the first three months of the first year visa being in the bank, and it won't be,because the agent ain't going to leave money in the bank are they !!

Doug Powell will they allow a combination of her social security funds along with a lump sum to equal the 800k? I’m just confused when that option kicks in. That’s really my main question with all this

Naomi McKenzie the first year extension has to be 800,000 Baht. If you transfer 65,000 baht per month as an international transfer for each of the 12 months up to the second extension you can switch to the 65,000 baht method for the second year, provided you met the first year rules (800,000 baht in the account for 3 months after the extension is approved, never reducing below 400,000 baht, and returning to 800,000 baht 2 months before the second extension. It's obviously much simpler to keep 800,000 baht in the account for the first

months). I switched to the 65,000 baht method at Hua Hin a couple of years ago.

Naomi McKenzie no, the combination method is, as far as I am informed, NOT possible for US citizens. It is only possible for applicants who can combine an income affidavit with a deposit part. US citizens cannot get their income verified. You could ask your Immigration if they allow the combination mehthod for the second one-year Extension of Stay. This will however NOT free you from the obligation to use the 800,000 THB method in the first year - and that means to apply for the 90-days Non-O Visa in the USA, using a home bank deposit equivalent to 800,000 THB, enter Thailand and get her bank account opened, transfer the 800,000 THB into it and later apply for the 1-year extension of stay permit. If you use an agent, you will need to use the agent over and over again every year, because Immigration will see that you violated against the rules of the upkeep of the deposit
