TLDR : Answer Summary
The conversation revolves around the cultivation of avocados in Thailand, particularly focusing on the struggles and successes of growing them. Participants share their experiences with avocado varieties, farming locations, and soil conditions needed for successful growth. There are mentions of avocados being available in grocery stores and some personal anecdotes of avocado-related dishes. However, the discussion deviates into humorous remarks about visas and unrelated topics, demonstrating a lighthearted community interaction.
I live on an Australian island that used to be an avocado farm, free avocados everywhere at the moment. They are very fussy trees, needing a subtropical climate (most of Thailand is too hot for them), deep rich spol, perfect drainage and protection from wind to do well. Any large plantation is vulnerable to root rot.
Bacon, lettuce, tomato and avocado sandwiches are very good. Guacamole and salsa, also very good. I'm from California, we grow a lot of them there. People starting planting avocado trees here, up north a bit over 10 years ago now here and they are finally mature trees producing fruit. I have one in the fridge. But they seem to not ripen that well here. Hard, then rotten.
the reason they only grow in the north of Thailand is that they are a subtropical tree rather than a tropical tree. They do not do well in constant heat. They also need perfect drainage and great soil to do well and are vulnerable to a fungus called phytopthera root rot. They actually like cool weather as long as it doesn't frost.
David Williams ok! I see! I live in South Florida when I am not in The Kingdom and avocados flourish there … we even have our own 🥑 specific to Florida. Our climate is very similar to Thailand but of course the “seasons” are more extreme here… so your explanation makes sense
Avocados are obviously not native, but nowadays are seen as an important cash crop and the industry is expanding rapidly. There are many farms now mainly around Chiang Mai:
