Nationality: American.

I am planning to visit Thailand again by land border Pedang Besar (Malaysia) later this month for a period of 2 weeks.

Is there any benefit for me to apply for a proper single-entry tourist visa at the consulate beforehand, or just wait get the exempt stamp at the land border?

I was previously in Thailand for about 90 days this year with 60 days since my last departure. These were mostly on airport visa exempts, and one extension

TLDR : Answer Summary
An American planning to visit Thailand for two weeks by land from Pedang Besar, Malaysia, wonders whether to apply for a single-entry tourist visa in advance or to rely on the visa-exempt entry stamp available at the border. Responses from the community suggest that there is no benefit to obtaining a tourist visa, as the traveler will receive a 45-day visa-exempt stamp upon entry.

You should not have a problem crossing into Thailand FROM Penang...a Thai tourist visa will not be of any advantage.

As you will be stamped in for 45 days.
