Worth while actually getting a motorbike licence for my time there as I know they fine you regardless on the spot iv been told 🙄
Answer summary
When considering whether to obtain a motorcycle license while in Thailand, it's essential to acknowledge both legal and safety perspectives. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is highly recommended for those holding a valid motorcycle license from their home country, as it helps avoid legal issues and potential insurance problems in case of an accident. Riding without a license can lead to hefty fines and being uninsured, which poses a significant risk if an accident occurs. Furthermore, if you don't possess a valid UK motorcycle license, you must take Thai exams to obtain a local license. While riding a motorbike can enhance your experience in Thailand, many suggest it may be safer to hire a car instead.

Dont bother , its the most dangerous thing by a country mile that you can do in Thailand .
Riding without a licence regarding police stops and fines is not an issue, you might be unlucky enough to get stopped a couple of times a year so a few hundred baht in fines.
The issue is, if you have an accident your insurance company will not pay out for the bike or more importantly medical expenses which could run into millions if serious.
For your life, please get a proper motorcycle license that includes proper instruction and proper bike handling exam and then practice,. practice. Knowing how to ride will at least keep you from letting your bike get away by your own ignorance. There are many great safety lessons that apply to riding a motorcycle in Thailand. Yes, it can be done, but learn the proper way to operate a motorcycle.
You need a motorcycle license from your home country and an international driving permit to legally ride in Thailand..
If you don't have that and are involved in an accident while riding illegally you will be in big trouble with the police and if someone else was injured you had better have a big bank account balance because you will be paying mega compensation and fines..
And if you are riding illegally your travel insurance will be worthless..
Think very carefully before doing anything really STUPID
But if you don't have a full uk licence and IDP you are illegally on the road and can therefore be fined, but worse you are uninsured if you have an accident.
