How can I change my address with the SSA while living in Thailand?

USA only.

I needed to change my address so I logged into SSA. There is no longer 2 addresses as before, physical and mailing. I am only allowed to "contact us" which is now Ai. I haven't tried yet as the Ai is resting for the night.

For the only time in 7 years and with no banking changes, I received the "proof of life" (aka SSA 7161) letter so I need a correct address.

There was also a notice online that letters can no longer be sent to the US. I emailed the FBU in Manila but they are overwhelmed so I don't expect to get any answers.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The original post discusses difficulties faced by an expat in Thailand trying to change their address for Social Security Administration (SSA) services. The expat notes that the SSA's website has changed, limiting address updates to AI contact, and expresses concern about a "proof of life" letter received. Community comments suggest alternative ways to update addresses, including phone calls and email to the Federal Benefits Unit (FBU) in Manila, though some express doubts about the current mail delivery situation to the US.

Just send your Form SSA–7162 to the USA (Pennsylvania) using Thailand Post:

SOCIAL SECURITY ADMINISTRATION

PO BOX 7162

WILKES BARRE PA
*****
-7162

(USA)

Manila will contact you. I just did my change of address. I don't remember how long it took them, but it wasn't that long, maybe a week.

So good news and bad news

1st of all the reason I suddenly started receiving the proof of life letter after years. SSA did away with the two types of address so now there is no more mailing address.

Good. I managed to change my address via voice. 5 minute wait

Bad. They have not seen my mailing of the proof of life letter

so I will never get the proof of life letter and I won't be able to return and my SS gets cut off.

I guess if I actually knew when mine was sent out, I could download a blank one and send that in.

You could FedEx UPS or DHL the letter

If it’s important you won’t care what the price is

except many of them have stopped too.

But that is not the crux of my post. If I can't get my address changed, I can't receive it.

something to do with customs. It used to be that if it looked like under a certain amount it would go through now everything is being inspected.

SSA said it to but with no way around it.

I have been watching this issue of packages between Thailand in the United States. apparently the current administration in the United States had changed some of the regulations regarding the taxation of imported packages to the United States. there was a period of transition in which there was quite a bit of confusion as the regulations lacked specific implementation rules. Thai post was refusing mail to the United States for a while but last week I went and was able to have a letter accepted which was sent to a PO box in California. this action by thaipost refutes earlier action in which they would refuse any and all mail to the US. hopefully this indicates a shift in the normalization of mail services, at least letters to US destinations from Thailand. Good luck in getting your work done!
