In Phra Padaeng / Bangkok

I always like to mention that, although this is a forum basically focused on visas, I also believe it relates to life in Thailand for expatriates.

Anyway, as I always say, if any administrator is disturbed that this post is focused on another topic, I would like to point out that the title of this forum is also “And More,” you know. I suppose it refers to life here as an expatriate.

So I would like to send this message to everyone. If anyone feels offended, my apologies. I can always remove or delete the comment.

- A reflection on martial arts today !

I have been thinking about how many martial arts schools today have become just businesses, focused on monthly fees, medals, and competitions.

But for me, the true meaning of martial arts is something much deeper.

I am looking for a place that teaches discipline, respect, philosophy, balance, and the education of the spirit, not only physical technique.

Children and adults should learn humility, self-control, and awareness before learning how to kick or compete.

Martial arts were originally a spiritual path, but that essence seems to be fading. I still believe in the original concept: art before sport, spirit before medals.

My son is National ( 9 years old ) but he does not like Muay Thai. So I am more interested in finding a school that teaches traditional Taekwondo (Korean style), Kung Fu, or Karate, with a genuine and traditional approach, not only competition training.

I’m looking for a school with a spiritual and philosophical approach first, where children can develop discipline, respect, awareness, and mindfulness, and then learn techniques. The focus should be on personal growth and character development, not just competition or physical training.

If anyone knows a place like that, I would love to hear about it.

TLDR : Answer Summary
A user is seeking recommendations for martial arts schools in Bangkok that emphasize traditional values, philosophy, and character development over competition. They express concerns about the commercialization of martial arts today and wish to find a school that prioritizes discipline, respect, and personal growth for their son, who is not interested in Muay Thai. Several comments suggest specific schools, while others discuss the essence of martial arts and their training philosophies.

It takes too much time to go and come back, it’s not centered in Bangkok.

There is a good taekwondo school in Nong chok, RSR taekwondo

Sorry, but if you want your kid to learn all those values for real then send him training to a proper Thai gym.

Martial arts are made for fighting first of all as the name implies and if a school trains good fighters than it's good and in Thailand Muay Thai gyms train the best fighters period. Maybe you mean things that more than martial techniques are martial ways like kendo or judo?

I believe I was very clear in my first comment. I explained in full detail what my goal is for my son.

I understand your point, but that’s not exactly what I meant. I’m not looking for a gym focused on competition or fighting skills. My idea of martial arts is more traditional — where discipline, respect, and spiritual growth come first, and physical training comes after. My son isn’t interested in Muay Thai; I’m more into Korean Taekwondo, Karate, or Kung Fu taught with that traditional mindset.

Yes, but I clearly specified the types of martial arts I am considering for my son.

What you are asking for is an Akido school. They are very philosophical but it is also the most useless martial arts put there.

No, not Aikido. My son isn’t interested. We already talked about it and he said no.
