how do people in thailand use cash without using ATM and no thai bank
Answer summary
Expats in Thailand often use cash without relying on ATMs or Thai banks by bringing cash from their home countries and exchanging it for Thai baht at various money changers available throughout the country. There are also options such as using services like Wise or Remitly for transfers to Thai bank accounts, which allows for cash withdrawals without high ATM fees. Many locals use QR codes for payments, and expats can explore digital wallets to pay for goods and services. This method helps avoid the fees associated with international ATM withdrawals.

Comments being rude for no reason..

Your option is ATM as much as possible. Reject the ATM exchange rate.

Schwab has a good card for foreign withdrawals, sometimes it’s better value than transferring to a thai bank.

You can use Morta to pay businesses with a QR code. It's one of the only payment systems that doesn't require a long term visa to load money with a foreign card. You can also open a Wise account to xter money. Otherwise you will need to take cash out of the ATM.

Well Thai people are paid in cash but as for foreigners, if they are on holiday then they bring cash with them and exchange it here. If they are expats living here then they are normally on a visa that allows them to open a bank account. I'm guessing all others know of the problems and just use a ATM card. There are so many people complaining that banks in Thailand won't allow them to open a bank account without having a visa that allows that, that is no different to most (probably all) highstreet banks in western countries.

Since this is in the DTV & Retirement Visa group I assume the question was in regards to long term stay not short term? Please clarify as what you can and should depends on how long you will do it for.

Bringing in cash and exchanging it is fine for short term trips but if you are here for more than a few weeks then that means carrying a lot of cash around with you. If you lose it is is gone.

Ideally you would get a Thai bank account and transfer into your bank account and use Prompt Pay (QR Codes) to pay for things locally.

I know that getting a Thai bank account is getting much harder these days so this might not be an option but you should definitely try as I know first hand people who have succeeded when the wisdom of the crowd was that is was impossible. So I would not say impossible just highly improbable.

Your other options are fee free cards from your home country and using local ATM's to withdraw cash this means you get the latest rate which can be both good and bad. Always take out the maximum daily amount where possible so as to reduce fees if you do not have a free free card or one that reimburses you. To minimise the number of ATM transactions.

Other options are things like Western Union to transfer to yourself and pick it up.

There is a few videos getting around TikTok and probably Facebook saying tourists can now get a card there that allows them to scan QR codes when paying but it’s limited to proper merchants where they can generate a QR code onto a terminal, if it’s just a mom and pop type store it doesn’t work with them. Once my money on that card ran out didn’t bother using it ever again as it’s a waste of time.
