Hello, I was wondering if anyone knows if it is possible to import a pitbull to Thailand? I've read so much conficting information. Is there a total ban on importing that breed or is it just difficult to find an airline that will take her in that country?
Answer summary
Importing a pit bull to Thailand is generally not permitted due to breed restrictions enforced by the Thai government. While airlines often have their own policies that make it difficult, the Thai Consulate has explicitly prohibited the importation of breeds like Pit Bull Terriers and American Staffordshire Terriers. However, there are some new regulations in Bangkok that apply to existing pets, requiring muzzles in public. To import a pit bull, you would need a pet relocation service, and costs can be significantly high, often exceeding $5000.

I brought a staffy in. Vet did all paperwork and we used Eva Air who were fantastic. A Thai friend did the immigration part which involved a brown envelope to smoothen the process

I believe they're banned, not worth paying someone who says they'll import only for customs to say no. Then what do you do

Just what Thailand needs - another dog. Be aware that Thai dog owners (& farang imitators) will allow their dogs to roam completely unchecked/lead-free. No matter how fierce your dog is, a pack of wild dogs can do some damage. A friend in Buriram had his dog torn to pieces.

yes of course it is....moron. If you breed a dog to fight and be aggressive thats its nature. I could take a lion and be the world most responsible and loving owner and it would still be dangerous. Sight dogs chase, herders herd, pointers point, terriers go to ground....but pit bulls dont fight...you are an idiot parroting the same rubbish

just to add.... if you're coming from the states, it helps to have a friendly vet that will list your dog as a mix of some sort for the usda health certificate. Mine arrived as great Dane mix and whippet mix. It just gives less room for scrutiny.

And any 'pure bred' akc anything is subject to hefty import tax. Mix breeds are not.

Mine both came in (April 2025) via a Lufthansa flight Chicago-bangkok. I used agents at both ends (highly recommend doing this) cost was about $5k usd total for 2 dogs, one of them a great dane mix at 90+lbs. This is your best choice. The dogs get a layover in a pet hotel that checks their health before the 2nd flight. Safe for them, safe for you. Must go through special cargo, must use a pet taxi or your own car to get from bkk to anywhere else in Thailand.

No restrictions with bringing the dog in

However airlines are fussy. I brought my staffy in from the uk and used a pet relocation agent due to this issue

Scroll below new Rules for 2026.

—-

You generally cannot import Pit Bull Terriers or related breeds into Thailand for permanent entry, as they are listed as prohibited for importation by official Thai sources, though recent local rules in Bangkok might require muzzling for existing pets, the import ban for breeds like Pit Bull Terrier and American Staffordshire Terrier is clear from the Thai Consulate. Always verify with the official Thai Embassy/Consulate and your specific airline, as rules can change and airlines have their own policies.

Key Points:

Import Ban:

Pit Bull Terriers, American Pit Bull Terriers, and American Staffordshire Terriers are prohibited from being imported into Thailand.

Official Sources: The Thai Consulate in Sydney explicitly lists these breeds as banned for importation.

Local Rules (Different from Import): While importing is banned, Bangkok has introduced rules for existing pets, requiring Pit Bulls to be muzzled and handled by specific age groups if they are already in the city, but this doesn't override the import ban.

Airline Policies: Airlines often have stricter rules than countries, so check with your carrier, as many prohibit these breeds from flying as cargo or even within the cabin.

Recommendation:

Do not attempt to bring a Pit Bull to Thailand, as importation is generally not permitted, and you will likely be denied entry with the dog.

==

From 2026:

Thailand does not have outright banned dog breeds for import, but Bangkok has implemented strict new rules for "dangerous" breeds (like Pit Bulls, Rottweilers, Dobermans, Akitas, German Shepherds, and Fila Brasileiro) and any dog with a history of aggression, requiring muzzles and short leashes in public starting in 2026, with fines for non-compliance.

Airlines also have their own breed restrictions, so checking with your carrier is crucial before travel.

For Bringing Pets to Thailand (Import):

No Breed Ban: The Thai government generally does not ban specific breeds for entry into the country.

Airline Rules:

Major hurdle is the airline; they might refuse to transport certain breeds (especially flat-faced dogs or large/powerful breeds).

Documentation: You need a valid health certificate, microchip, and up-to-date vaccinations (rabies, distemper, etc.).

Bangkok's New Pet Rules (Effective 2026):

Designated Breeds: Pit Bulls, Rottweilers, Dobermans, Akitas, German Shepherds, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, Bull Terriers, and Fila Brasileiro are considered dangerous.

Public Restrictions: Owners must use muzzles and leashes no longer than 1 meter (about 3 feet) when outside their home.

Fines: Violations can lead to significant fines (up to 25,000 baht).

Registration: Mandatory microchipping and registration for all pets.

Key Takeaway: While you can generally bring most breeds into Thailand, be prepared for strict airline policies and, if in Bangkok, the new muzzling and leashing requirements for certain powerful breeds.

The only way to bring pit bull into Thailand is through a pet relocation service. It’s about $6000 . No airlines will allow you to do it yourself. Thailand does not have breed restrictions. Good luck

this interesting. Tough luck if you are 66.

Local Regulations (Bangkok)

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has an ordinance that places special restrictions on certain dog breeds within the city limits.

Restricted Breeds: Pit Bull Terriers, Bull Terriers, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, Rottweilers, and Fila Brasileiro are considered "controlled breeds".

Requirements for Restricted Breeds: Owners of these breeds in Bangkok must obtain special permission, ensure their dogs are leashed and muzzled at all times in public spaces, and they must be handled by individuals between 15 and 65 years old.
