Why was I asked for the 'original' scan of my passport after submitting a compressed black and white version?

Yesterday I was asked for a scan of all pages of my passport. I took a black and white scan with my phone and scanning app, which I then compressed online to get under 3MB.

Today I was asked for the 'original' scan of all pages of my passport.

Has anyone else had this? Is it likely to be because the file included the word 'compressed' or because it was black and white rather than greyscale?
