Why are banking apps in Thailand failing, and should I switch back to cash?

Well, consistent with nothing every working correctly in this country, I've now been stranded twice in 1 week at Rimping while my app fails. Friday, Rimping (in maya) was unable to accept payment from mobile apps from Krungsri, K bank, and bkk bank for many hours. Today, my app continued to freeze and throw error messages while trying to pay. The cashier said it wasn't only me today having problems.

After 5 minutes I had to abondon my groceries and walk to my bike where my wallet was. I've come to trust the banking system here as reliable and efficient so I don't normally carry my wallet on me, unless I'm out at the bars since most of the apps consistently go down for maintenance at 11:50pm every Saturday for some reason.

Thus I've come to the point where I can no longer rely on the Thai banks to provide consistent service, back to cash I go.

For anyone interested, I’ve written extensively about all the changes that are coming to Thailand related to digital money, QR codes, apps, Blockchain and the reason why Thai banks are doing KYC or Know Your Customer among many other topics. They are preparing the groundwork for digital IDs which already started in Thailand.

Another hell will come soon. When they do something new, especially digital or whatever new system, they always make new problems and affect on many innocent people. very probably, many people will experience freezing accounts and no mobile app again and have to run to bank again and again with such tones of documents and evidences. 🤣

Never had a problem paying with my app and it allows me to carry less cash. But I always carry a little backup cash just in case.

Eight years in Thailand and I’ve never had a banking app payment fail. Sometimes the internet is slow but it eventually connects.

The apps I use don't fail very often, but yes, all payment/banking apps do fail from time to time.

I use cash wherever I go and as often as I can. It’ll be too late to cry over it when it’s gone.

Me and my Thai wife both tried to use our SCB bank apps in Lotus, but failed, we had to use cash.

The problem you are experiencing I doubt very much is a bank problem nor a transfer problem it's a promptpay problem which is independent from the banking system. It typically has issues like you stated. You tried to pay a different bank hence the issue. Best advice is to open an account at ALL the banks and if you have trouble paying just transfer the funds into the bank account of the same type you are trying to pay for. This also has another advantage, that is you don't have to go finding your particular atm as you have all the banks.

if you have a banking app you use and have promptpay I don't think you understand how it works. Those qr codes are promptpay mate...

yeah I had the same problem with scb this morning which is why I said in the beginning to have all the banks so you never get caught out.
