i arrived in hanoi a few days back and need some advice regarding my tax situation before I apply for the DTV. I stayed in thailand for 2+ years on ED visa and started working remotely as freelancer in early 2025. My tax residence during that time was in thailand and not in my home country because i stayed over 183 days in thailand. I don't have any residence in my home country anymore so i'm not obligated to pay tax there. The thing is I never applied for a TIN in thailand because it just wasn't possible in this constellation. How to request a TIN if you technically are not even allwed to work? I can provide old tax filings a few years back if thats requested, but its not even closely related to my freelancing work that i'm doing now as I had a normal 9-5 job back then. So what should I do? Should I now try to get a TIN here somehow retrospectively by contacting a tax lawyer etc? Besides that I have all requirements for the DTV (500k for 3 months, portfolio, client invoices, client contract, bank statements, etc). I don't want to apply for soft power because i actually need to WORK and don't have time for muay thai or cooking. Would appreciate any help.
Answer summary
The individual seeks guidance on obtaining a Tax Identification Number (TIN) in Thailand while applying for a Digital Nomad Visa (DTV). They have stayed in Thailand on an Education (ED) visa for over two years, began working remotely as a freelancer, and are now based in Hanoi. Notably, they did not apply for a TIN during their ED visa period despite being a tax resident due to their long-term stay. Several community comments provide contrasting opinions on the necessity and process of acquiring a TIN and emphasize the importance of compliance issues leading up to the DTV application.

Your post don’t really make sense. I also never had a work permit in Thailand. But getting a TIN has nothing to do with that. Took me 5 minutes to obtain a tin. The visa and work permit matters zero in regards to TIN (im on DTV)

So in those years you were supposed to be thai tax resident, you never spent or brought in any money into Thailand?

You might want step carefully going forward. Having to proof of tax residency anywhere for years can land you in serious Banking trouble. Not to mention potential legal troubles.

Tore, obtaining a TIN is the easy part—the 5-minute process is by design. The complexity lies in the Audit Trail it creates for your past 2 years of remote income. The Thai Revenue Department isn't looking for TIN holders; they are looking for 'Tax Residency Gaps' in the ED-to-DTV transition. If you're 100% compliant, that's excellent. My service is for the travelers who want to ensure their 'Banking and Legal' status is iron-clad before the 2025 enforcement cycles. Safe.

Do not overthink it. The Embassy you are applying to will not be looking at your Ed Visa time and checking any corresponding tax records. They have no ability to do it and frankly, are not interested. Just apply and get on with it. There are dozens if not hundreds in your situation and are here on DTV. Good luck

Where is your business registered? That's where you need to file taxes. If your business is not legitimate/not registered as a legal entity anywhere then don't even try applying for DTV as they will reject your application and keep your application fee.

Anonymous participant 464 i work as individual freelancer, so I thought there is no requirement at all to have a registered business as long as I have a professional portfolio, invoices, and all that. Also where is the legal juristication if i'm not at home anywhere. I could easily incorporate somewhere now but then this won't change anything on my tax situation. They do ask for personal(!) income tax and not corporate tax filings right?

Anonymous participant just because you are not at home anymore does not mean you are not required to file income tax in your passport country, or the country your clients are in. Being in Thailand more than 180 days does not mean you don't have to file income tax in your home country anymore. You made money working remotely last year, so income tax on those earnings must be filed. Where is your passport from? Also under soft power they also in many cases ask for your latest income tax filing.

yes thats correct if you are from the US, then the IRS will hunt you down on worldwide income. But I'm from a small country in europe and i don't have a residence there anymore nor a business, etc. What i have is only income tax before i moved to thailand and this is from 2-3 years ago when I worked a regular job.

Applying for the DTV after 2 years on an ED visa while working remotely is a high-risk move. The Thai Revenue Department is tightening the 'Audit' on tax residency for

. If your 500k THB proof of funds isn't aligned with your previous ED stay, you're flagging yourself for a retroactive tax audit. I specialize in Global Financial Audits for DTV applicants—you need to 'Clean' your tax trail before you submit that file. DM me, I'll show you the compliance map I'm using for ED-to-DTV transitions. Safe.

the 500k i have has nothing to do with remitted income. That's just savings on my home countries bank account.

Anonymous participant That’s a common misconception. The source of the 500k isn't the issue—the Linkage is. By presenting those home-country savings for the DTV after 2 years on an ED visa, you are providing the Thai Revenue Department with the 'Financial Node' they need to audit your past 24 months of worldwide income. Under the new CRS (Common Reporting Standard) protocols, 'Offshore' is no longer 'Hidden.' My Global AI Audit specifically checks your 'Information Trail' to ensure you aren't unintentionally flagging yourself for a retroactive tax event. Better to be iron-clad now for $60 than to explain it to an auditor later. Safe.
