* I have recently gotten a DTV in Jakarta and am back in Thailand.
* I am a Japanese national & a framework to prevent double taxation is in place between Japan and Thailand.
* As I am planning to live and work here more than 180days per calendar year (most probably around 300 days per calendar year) , I believe I will be subject to personal income taxes in Thailand.
* I have previously worked under a working visa in Thailand, therfore, I have a tax ID in Thailand and Thai bank account.
Q: Has anyone here been in a similar situation—staying in Thailand for more than 180 days while working remotely for a company under a DTV visa—and had experience paying taxes in Thailand?
I'd appreciate any insights or experiences you could share!
The law on taxation in Thailand states that if you stay for more than 180 days in a year, you are considered a tax resident and must pay taxes in Thailand, regardless of your visa type. However, it also specifies that obtaining tax residency requires the appropriate visa. This means you cannot establish legal tax residency or file a tax return while on a tourist visa, especially if you’re doing border runs—it seems that this is not legally allowed.
So my question is: Can you obtain Thai tax residency and file a tax return with a DTV visa? Has anyone successfully done this in 2024?
I’d appreciate any insights on this topic. Thanks!
Very premature here but …anyone have an idea of the long term implications of retirement in Thailand re the ever changing tax situation? It’ll be regarding over 50 retirement visa etc . Cheers
