I guess this has been asked before but unfortunately Facebook doesn't allow you to search for particular stuff

My question is :-

When you arrange to set up a mobile phone for general everyday use in Thailand and selecting your Thai SIM contract ( for banking and id status passport etc )

Which is best practice. ????

Keep your UK mobile phone and insert Thai SIM ( I have dual SIM capacity in my phone )

Default your phone to the Thai SIM and continue to use your UK mobile phone handset

Or should you buy a new Thai mobile phone

Purchase Thai SIM and use this as your main mobile

I would appreciate comments on the pros and cons of either or

As always many thanks
Answer summary
When setting up mobile phone services in Thailand, expats have several options for using their phones with both Thai and foreign SIM cards. Using a dual SIM phone allows you to keep an existing UK number while using a Thai SIM for local services. Many users suggest that keeping your original SIM active (often on a low-cost plan) is beneficial for banking and receiving OTPs. eSIM technology allows for convenient use of multiple networks without needing to carry an extra physical SIM card. It's recommended to set the Thai SIM as the primary for data and manage roaming settings accordingly. Frequent communication apps like WhatsApp can remain functional across SIMs, important for expats needing to verify banking issues or send international messages.

I recently arrived from Australia. My Telstra phone has data roaming off and I get calls , messages and WhatsApp on wifi. I purchased a new phone and AIS contract with a Thai sim. Working so well

As many have mentioned, I still keep my UK SIM in my mobile phone because occasionally it is necessary to receive messages from institutions like banks, for instance when they need to verify if a purchase attempt is legitimate and require a prompt response. Most modern mobile phones now offer the option of using an eSIM, and my device has two physical SIM slots. However, if I choose to use an eSIM, it disables the ability to use both physical SIM slots simultaneously.

I use my US phone with dual sim - one US and one Thai, configured like so many have said here. There is one downside to this however. Some may refute this, but it's from my own experience. Some apps will not run on a US phone, even with VPN disabled. One example is Shoppee, and another is Krungthai Bank. I had to close my Krungthai account because the app wouldn't work. Call center tech support confirmed this was because my phone was from the US. Regardless of the fact there was a Thai sim card.

You can get an e-sim installed from the net.

Yes...akways used a separate phone for thai sim! Start off with an AIS 5G sim but using their tourist 4G option... costs 999thb which gives totally unlimited download and superior countrywide travelling coverage than khrappy 5G.

After numbers of years always habitually getting a new sim each trip - there is a better way to maximuse the life of your sim and make it stay usable iver multipke trips to thailand!

- The advertising says it has a Max 45days expìry life, but that is not necessarily true. If you have plenty of unused call credits the sim stays alive so long as there is enough to cover the 20thb per month maintenance consumption of credit! We ourselves are more fortunate in that thai Mrs's local bank acct auto pays 30thb monthly, but for Joe tourist all he does is to preload the sim with sufficient call credit for the sim to stay alive till he comes back to Thailand.

Another good thing about this thai 4Gon5Gsim option us that it is domestic thai network only therefore the credits do not get hit with international data costs if one forgets to put it into flightmode upon leaving Thailand!

I have dual sim, in Thailand I use just the Thai sim, my NZ one turned off. My chats to back home are using messenger or email. If there is an important reason I need to use the NZ sim I turn it on for the day. Roaming on my NZ plan costs $10 per day, we go for 60-90 days hence it is turned off 🤔

in the phone settings you can choose which is primary for data, and which is default for outgoing calls. For most people they'll also want to turn off data roaming for the one that isn't the location where you're at just to make sure, since data roaming can be very expensive. You should be able to receive text messages and phone calls for both numbers regardless of where you're at. I never answer phone calls from the place I'm not at because it's expensive, but receiving a phone call is usually enough for me to know what it was about to text back or take care of it some other way.

I am talking about accessing your home bank account so that funds can be transferred to the Thai bank ,

If you try to open your home bank app using you Thai SIM and withdraw money will the home bank prevent transactions due to you being on a Thai network
Liam *********
Liam *********
Paul James It probably depends on the app, but not in my experience. I have used both NatWest and Revolut phone banking apps in Thailand with a phone using my Thai SIM (and with my UK SIM in a totally different phone) and not had any problems. I may have had to do a little extra verification (face ID?) for the first transaction but it's a couple of years ago so I'm not even sure if I had to do that.

The sim card you use has nothing to do with that. That's all about the IP address you are connecting from. Just using your home sim card won't change that you're still connecting from Thailand because you would just be roaming on a Thai network and have the same IP address. Some banks might block overseas access, but it's not common at larger banks because they know their customers travel. If it does get blocked, you would need to use a VPN.

I have two active SIMs in my iPhone, a US one and a Thai one. Before I had a dual SIM phone, I used two different phones.

If you already have a dual-SIM phone, then you don't need to buy another phone unless you want one. Just get a Thai e-SIM from one of the local mobile networks (AIS or True/DTAC) and use both SIMs together simultaneously. You'll probably want to set the Thai SIM as the default for making calls and using data. The UK line will still remain active so you can still receive calls and texts on that number.

Chris Blunt for messaging to UK and back. using WhatsApp, should you change your UK number to the new Thai number in WhatsApp app
Chris *******
Chris *******
Paul James You can, but it doesn't really matter which number you use. If people know you by your existing number then you may as well keep that. It doesn't affect the functionality of WhatsApp.

Paul James So apparently you even not need an active phone number to keep using Whatsapp as is. Only when changing something in Whatsapp where a otp code is needed, that's not possible before changing whatsapp to an active phine number 🙏
Peter ****************

Paul James I used Whatsapp living in Thailand, with my Dutch phone number. However the internet connection was via my Thai sim. When T-mobile killed my Dutch number, which I had for over 20 years, I still could use Whatsapp with all contacts. BUT !!! When I needed a new phone and put Whatsapp on that, of course whatsapp could not send the otp code to my old killed number which was needed for a new installation. Then I first changed the phone number to Thai on my old phone. After that, there was some kind of backup to keep the existing data. Only then I put the Thai sim in my new phone. Then whatsapp could send the registration code to my Thai number on my new phone.

Paul James That's what I did. You can move your number to a low cost contract for as little as £2 a month.

I will need to keep my UK bank active for the transfer of funds into my Thai bank, so I assume I should continue with my UK mobile contract ( probably move my contract to the lowest data and texts calls etc )

@Paul ******
You probably need your UK number, so you would want to continue paying. Do you have a bank in the UK? Any accounts you setup like an icloud account or any number of online accounts that have a text message multi-factor authentication? You will instantly be locked out of all of those accounts the moment you let that phone number expire. And many of them will not accept a Thai number, so you need to keep your home number.

ScenicBeet5068 to keep WhatsApp as is then you need to Keep your paying UK mobile contract. Is that correct??

Paul James both numbers remain fully active. You simply select on your phone which SIM provides the data so of course you would select the Thai SIM for this. Your apps will get their data from it this way.

Paul James I use pre-pay in Thailand so only activate it for the months I am there but ensure it stays in credit so does not get terminated while I am away (there is a expiry date on my sim which gets extended every time I add money or I can buy 6 months extension for 12B)

I use a single device with both sim cards (both e-sim since the US version of iphone has no slot for physical sim). When I'm in Thailand, I set the data to use the Thai sim card as primary. When I'm in the US, I set the US sim card as primary and turn off roaming for my Thai sim card. This lets me receive the one time passcodes that I need for both my Thai banking needs and my US banking/accounts.

I would add that before leaving your country for Thailand, set your home country phone to allow wifi calling. Important to do this in your home providers network, as some providers restrict you from being able to do it elsewhere to prevent hijacking your number from abroad.
