I have a question for you. I have been living in Thailand for a while now. I'm from America. My dad is 81 and still living in America. I would like him to come and live here in Thailand with me.
He is covered through his VA in America for all of his medical issues which are many at his age. If he comes to live her is there a VA in Thailand that will pay for his medical issues. Does anyone have experience with this?
TIA
Answer summary
The post discusses the possibility of the author's 81-year-old father moving to Thailand and whether he can access VA healthcare services there. Several comments provide insights into using the VA's Foreign Medical Program (FMP), which only covers service-connected medical conditions. Users share their experiences, emphasizing that while some facilities in Thailand can bill the VA directly for service-related issues, patients generally need to pay upfront for care and then seek reimbursement from the VA. It’s noted that there are no VA hospitals in Thailand, and the quality of care provided can be superior compared to the U.S.

VA will only cover what his actual compensation issues are. He could be 100%, but if his only issue/claim was an amputated limb, that is all they are going to cover….unless FMP has expanded and I didn’t get the memo… that was the biggest limiting factor.
Medical insurance with Kaiser. Are their any special insurance companies that will
Cover seniors in Thailand? It’s seems crazy in general for people to move to retire but can’t get coverage because of age. I am 57 so I know mines will be expensive but way less than then the US.
This is something that you don't want to leave on a random opinion on Facebook.....sit down with both American and Thailand insurance companies to verify every last letter in your policy to avoid unexpected bankruptcy 🙏 hope that you both can spend some time together in the 🌞
va foreign medical plan only reimburses for care that is a specifically listed va disability. not for all care. patient pays 100% upfront to foreign provider on delivery of care and patient applies for reimbursement from va that is far from immediate.
The only thing that depends on retired is TriCare for Life.
VA Foreign Medical Coverage doesn't care about length of service or retirement, only what is Service Connected. Ratings by VA doesn't matter either, Service Connected Rated 0% is still covered.
Most posts have good info. Most talk about VA FMP. Google it, READ it, FRICKIN understand it.
I am retired and use both TriCare for Life (don't confuse with TriCare) and VA FMP.
Outpatient expect to Pay and get Reimbursed.
Inpatient go to a hospital that is Associated with TriCare for Life or VA FMP. Expect a 25-30% down payment before admission with TriCare for Life. VA FMP should be fully covered. Except take home meds.
My father moved to Thailand when he was 80.. Diabetic and a coupla strokes ..He just went to the public hospitals when he needed too..no problems or big expenses..good treatment to..Not the minefield it is in the U S.
I’m a 100% P&T rated American veteran. I just had the most comprehensive over 50 physical I’ve ever had in my life in Khon Kaen. Extensive lab work, very extensive imaging, consultations with doctors, etc. and I paid $490 out-of-pocket (by choice). By far the best healthcare treatment I have ever received! Not sure if this helps, but your dad will probably receive much better healthcare here than in the states!
Adrian White had a physical yesterday that included x-rays, EKG, blood work and an upper -lower sonogram with results the same day. It also included cancer screening from the blood drawn. $183.49 out the door. This happened at the Thai Crown Prince hospital in Tha Bo in the Nong Khai province. Very good service to say the least.
Is he 100% p and t??? If so the va only covers what his disability connections are. He can sign up for fmp. Foreign medical program. But he has to sign up and get an approval letter before leaving the usa. However I have been waiting fir reimbursement for champva for our child and irs been over 10 months now. So getting reimbursement for medical takes a long time and if he is needed expensive medication ir medical care its troubling. Your dad still needs to meet all financial and other requirements for his Thai visa. Might i suggest either cambodia which I an easy visa but he might have to travel for his health care. He can get a 1 yr visa inexpensive with minimal requirements. Also vietnam is another easy requirement However he has to leave every 80 days and come back. But most veterans go to the Phillipines
As they have 1 va there and will cover your service connection disabilities.
He can get a visa for $1500 deposit, a 1 time $1500 processing fee and every year has to pay i think $100 for a renewal fee and $10 for the special Phillipines card
Ron Cooper only thing thar depends on retired is TriCare for Life.

Dennis Z. Ward Ohhh blow it out your pompous ass!! His question was very vague and non-specific regarding his circumstances. Therefore, his circumstances dictate what kind of coverage he has in Thailand. And THAT is dictated whether he retired or not. Generalities in questions begats general answers, so you can kiss my ruby red ass you arrogant pri*k!!
You can sign up for the VA Foreign Medical Program but it only covers service connected conditions. I am 100% PT. I applied for medical insurance but the .costs were prohibitive. The deductible was
I do not have experience with the VA. I have a buddy who gets his meds from the VA. He goes home half the year and when he travels to Thailand the docs give him a 6 month prescription for whatever he needs.
I have heard there is a VA hospital in Manila Philippines - 4 hour flight.
Philippines, but there is an official U.S. VA Outpatient Clinic located in Metro Manila.U.S. VA Facilities in the PhilippinesManila VA Clinic: Located at the U.S. Embassy's Seafront Compound along Roxas Boulevard in Pasay City, this is the only official U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs healthcare facility outside the United States and its territories.Services provided: It operates strictly as an outpatient clinic providing primary care, mental health care, cardiology, dermatology, and prescriptions for service-connected disabilities. It does not handle emergency inpatient hospitalization or care for non-service-connected conditions.
Just went to a private hospital yesterday for a lower back issue that turned out to be muscle related, not spine related (which is listed in my VA files, so would be covered for some $ but I have to pay cash and “can” file thru FMP (Foreign Med Prog) and get some or most reimbursed in 3-6 months, via direct deposit)(used to be via check mailed)
I seen Dr twice, before n after.
I got 4 X-Rays
I got 1 injection @ Hospital (intravenously)
I got 3 prescriptions @ Hosp Phar
Total cost: :-)🙂 Less than $250 cash. That included the Tip for the young man assigned to push me everywhere in the hospital, in a wheelchair, the entire time (& then delivered me to the excellent restaurant on the first floor around 4:30) I hadn’t eaten good in a couple days)
Best hospital visit I EVER HAD in my life. I am almost 70
Restaurant was Outstanding

PS: Even in pain early in, I FELT like I spent the day out with my Wife and Cousin that drove us there and stayed with us the entire time.
Then: We drove home just as the Bangkok Sukhumvit roads started to flood. The NORMAL 30 min drive home took 3 EXCITING hours to get home. Saya drove like a pro Slowly in average of 8”-16” (estimated) water.
Alex Alexander I don’t have a recommendation for you, that should come from others that know the system much better than I. I simply provided my experiences so you can start to understand the medical system here and abroad. Not every hospital here will be the same.
Overseas they only cover service connected conditions.
I live in Pattaya and Bangkok Hospital here direct bills the VA for anything service connected through the FMP (Foreign Medical Program). He can download his eligibility letter from VA.gov
Steve Barsalou I live here 20 years and I spend a fortune in the hospital. The insurance sucks. I have tried to VA back then but nothing ever happened. Maybe they fixed it. I might be too old to try it now on 79 but I am a Vietnam vet I might just try and see just for the fun of it.
James if you get your FMP letter and bring it to international insurance on the 2nd floor in Bangkok Hospital I promise you it’s smooth now.
It takes a day or two for them to update your file but then you can be seen for any service connected conditions for the price of your signature.
I have chronic skin issues and also hypertension that both doctors require me to be seen every 6 months. After every appointment I pick up meds, sign forms and walk away. Been that way for several years now.
